Alcohol consumption, alcohol‐metabolizing enzyme genotypes, and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes: Sex‐specific findings from the Fukuoka Diabetes Registry

In East Asian individuals with type 2 diabetes, increases in alcohol consumption were inversely associated with HbA1c levels in men, whereas the amount of alcohol consumption was associated with HbA1c levels in a J‐shaped manner in women. The alcohol–HbA1c associations were similarly observed, regardless of genetic susceptibility to alcohol metabolism.

Concurrently, the phosphorylation of fructose to fructose 1‐phosphate (F1P) occurs in conjunction with the conversion of ATP to ADP. Subsequently, F1P inhibits pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2).
