A 400-solar-mass black hole in the galaxy M82 [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2014
M82 X-1, the brightest X-ray source in the galaxy M82, has been thought to be an intermediate-mass black hole (100 to 10,000 solar masses) because of its extremely high luminosity and variability characteristics, although some models suggest that its ...

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Phonographic neighbors, not orthographic neighbors, determine word naming latencies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The orthographic neighborhood size (N) of a word—the number of words that can be formed from that word by replacing one letter with another in its place—has been found to have facilitatory effects in word naming.

Antibacterial and Anticancer Activity of Bioactive Fraction of Syzygium cumini L. Seeds

open access: yesHayati Journal of Biosciences, 2011
Syzygium cumini L. better known as Jamun belonging to the family Myrtaceae is identified to have antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and anti-oxidant activities. Anticancer activity of S. cumini L. fruits has been demonstrated.

Infrared and Raman studies on polylactide acid and polyethylene glycol-400 blend

open access: yes, 2016
As a biodegradableplastic, polylactideacid (PLA) can be blended with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form a polymer blend because PEG has a good miscibility with PLA.

Brucella NyxA and NyxB dimerization enhances effector function during infection

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Brucella abortus thrives inside cells thanks to the translocation of effector proteins that fine‐tune cellular functions. NyxA and NyxB are two effectors that destabilize the nucleolar localization of their host target, SENP3. We show that the Nyx proteins directly interact with each other and that their dimerization is essential for their function ...

'Nordic' Hamstrings Exercise - Engagement Characteristics and Training Responses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The present study examined the neuromuscular activation characteristics of the hamstrings during the 'Nordic' hamstrings exercise (NHE) and changes in the eccentric strength of the knee flexors with NHE training.

The Vitality of Kabiye in Togo Zur Überlebensfähigkeit des Kabiye in Togo

open access: yesAfrica Spectrum, 2009
In Togo, speakers of Kabiye have been in contact with the speak¬ers of Ewe for several decades due to migration. As a result of this language contact, many members of the Kabiye speech community have become bilingual in Kabiye and Ewe.

The carboxylate “gripper” of the substrate is critical for C‐4 stereo‐inversion by UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
UDP‐glucuronic acid 4‐epimerase (UGAepi) catalyzes NAD+‐dependent interconversion of UDP‐glucuronic acid (UDP‐GlcA) and UDP‐galacturonic acid (UDP‐GalA) via C4‐oxidation, 4‐keto‐intermediate rotation, and C4‐reduction. Here, Borg et al. examined the role of the substrate's carboxylate group in the enzymic mechanism by analyzing NADH‐dependent reduction
