Production of 5-aminolevulinic acid by methanogens
Journal of Fermentation and Bioengineering, 1989Abstract The possibility of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) accumulation in a culture medium was studied using Methanosarcina barkeri growing on a methanol minimal medium. To effect the accumulation of ALA in the culture medium, some ALA analogues were tested as inhibitors of ALA dehydratase.

Uroporphyria produced in mice by iron and 5-aminolevulinic acid
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1991Porphyria cutanea tarda and the analogous hepatic uroporphyria produced in rodents by aromatic hydrocarbons result from inactivation of hepatic uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD). Inactivation appears to be iron-dependent and may require induction of cytochromes of the P450IA subfamily.

The Utility of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid for Microsurgical Resection of Meningiomas
World Neurosurgery, 2020Fluorescence-guided resection of brain tumors using 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) has been established for high-grade gliomas. Recently, its application for the resection of low grade tumors and benign lesions including meningioma has been suggested in the literature.1 Achieving a Simpson grade I resection in meningioma surgery is associated with a ...

Two biosynthetic pathways to 5-aminolevulinic acid in algae
International Journal of Biochemistry, 1980Abstract 1. 1. In the X-ray induced mutant C-2A' of the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus, the formation of 5-aminolevulinic acid (LALA) is light dependent. ALA so formed arises by the classical ALA synthetase pathway involving glycine and succinate as substrates and also by the C-5 pathway using the intact 5-carbon skeleton of glutamate or 2-keto ...

Intraoperative 5-aminolevulinic-acid-induced fluorescence in meningiomas
Acta Neurochirurgica, 20105-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) has gained importance as an intraoperative photodynamic diagnostic agent for the extirpation of malignant gliomas. The application of this technique for resection of meningiomas has barely been explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of 5-ALA-induced fluorescence as a visual tool in meningioma resection

Fluorescence diagnosis of endometriosis using 5-aminolevulinic acid
Surgical Endoscopy, 2000The diagnosis of nonpigmented endometrial lesions by simple laparoscopic visualization is difficult and often inaccurate. We therefore sought to establish a new and more accurate method to visualize these nonpigmented peritoneal changes caused by endometriosis.A total of 37 patients received 30 mg 5-aminolevulinic acid/kg body weight 10 to 14 hs prior ...

Pharmaceutical analysis of 5-aminolevulinic acid in solution and in tissues
Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, 2006Quantification of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) in solution, and methods used to achieve this, have been extensively reported in the literature. However, validated methods have only rarely been presented and never have methods been compared. Due to a necessity in drug delivery research for optimised and validated methods for determination of ALA in ...

5-Aminolevulinic acid synthesis in epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi
The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2003Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis. The parasite manifests a nutritional requirement for heme compounds because of its biosynthesis deficiency. The aim of this study has been to investigate the presence of metabolites and enzymes of porphyrin pathway, as well as ALA formation in epimastigotes of T ...

Treatment of viral infections with 5-aminolevulinic acid and light
Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 1997When 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is exogenously supplied, protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is accumulated in various cells and makes them light sensitive. The possibility of using such an approach for the treatment of viral infections was studied in this work.ALA was added to cultured cells infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Accumulation of PpIX

Pleiotropic effects of 5-aminolevulinic acid in mouse brain
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 20165-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) seems to be responsible for the neuropsychiatric manifestations of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). Our aim was to study the effect of ALA on the different metabolic pathways in the mouse brain to enhance our knowledge about the action of this heme precursor on the central nervous system. Heme metabolism, the cholinergic
