7-Dehydrocholesterol is an endogenous suppressor of ferroptosis
NatureFerroptosis is a form of cell death that has received considerable attention not only as a means to eradicate defined tumour entities but also because it provides unforeseen insights into the metabolic adaptation that tumours exploit to counteract phospholipid oxidation1,2.

Evaluation of cytotoxic effects of 7-dehydrocholesterol on melanoma cells
Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2014Ultraviolet radiation is the main cause of skin cancers, and melanoma is the most serious form of tumor. There is no therapy for advanced-stage melanoma and its metastasis because of their high resistance to various anticancer therapies. Human skin is an important metabolic organ in which occurs photoinduced synthesis of vitamin D3 from 7 ...

The site of 7-dehydrocholesterol ultraviolet photolysis in domestic fowls
Acta Histochemica, 1983The site of the photolytic reaction leading to Vitamin D3 in fowls integument has been investigated by histochemical and biochemical analysis. The Vitamin D3 precursor, 7-dehydrocholesterol, is synthetized and stored mainly in the uropygial gland and in the same localization several amount of Vitamin D3 may be biochemically detected.

7-Dehydrocholesterol: A sterol shield against an iron sword
Molecular CellLi et al. and Freitas et al. recently identified 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC), a sterol produced through the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway, as a lipid-soluble antioxidant that protects cells from ferroptosis, a cell death pathway triggered by iron-catalyzed phospholipid peroxidation.1,2.

Inhibition of human fibroblasts sphingomyelinase by cholesterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1981Abstract An inhibition of human fibroblast sphingomyelinase by cholesterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol is shown. This effect is obtained for cholesterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol/sphingomyelin molar ratios above 0.1. Diffusion measurements performed on mixed liposomes demonstrated for cholesterol/sphingomyelin and 7-dehydrocholesterol/sphingomyelin molar

Intestinal sterols. I. Δ7-cholestenol and 7-dehydrocholesterol in feces
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 19551. 1. Fecal sterols from rats on a fat-free diet were found to contain substantial amounts of fast-acting sterols. Chromatography of the unsaponifiable matter resulted in the isolation of Δ7-cholestenol, cholesterol, and coprosterol, and in the identification of 7-dehydrocholesterol. 2. 2.

Effects of Tween 80 on liver microsomal 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1978Abstract Enzymatic conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to cholesterol by liver microsomes was increased by addition of Tween 80. This increase was proportional to Tween 80 concentration, and reached its maximum of 250% of baseline activity after addition of 300 μg/ml of Tween 80.

Probing the Biexponential Dynamics of Ring-Opening in 7-Dehydrocholesterol
The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2016Our prior discovery of a novel biexponential photochemical ring-opening in 7-dehydrocholesterol (DHC) to previtamin D3 [ Tang J. Chem. Phys. 2011 , 134 , 104503 ] is further explored with ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, and the results are compared with recently reported high-level theoretical calculations.
