Desmosterol Incorporation Into Ram Sperm Membrane Before Cryopreservation Improves in vitro and in vivo Fertility

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Pregnancy rates in ewes are markedly low after cervical insemination with frozen-thawed sperm. Sensitivity of ram sperm to freeze-thawing is related to the lipid composition of the membrane, particularly to its low sterol content.

Physiological Functions of Side-Chain-Retaining Sterols in the Brain and Their Roles in Neurodegenerative Diseases [PDF]

open access: yesMetabolites
Although the brain comprises only 2% of total body weight, it contains approximately 23% of the total cholesterol of the body. In the brain, cholesterol plays a critical role as a structural component of cell membranes and myelin sheaths.

DHCR24 inhibitor SH42 increases desmosterol without preventing atherosclerosis development in mice [PDF]

open access: yesiScience
Summary: The liver X receptor (LXR) is considered a therapeutic target for atherosclerosis treatment, but synthetic LXR agonists generally also cause hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia.

Adipose Tissue-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Alter Metabolites of Brain Cholesterol Homeostasis in An Alzheimer’s Model [PDF]

open access: yesCell Journal, 2023
Objective: Disruption of cholesterol homeostasis in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) plays a crucial role in diseasepathogenesis, making it a potential therapeutic target.

Characterisation of a desmosterol reductase involved in phytosterol dealkylation in the silkworm, Bombyx mori. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Most species of invertebrate animals cannot synthesise sterols de novo and many that feed on plants dealkylate phytosterols (mostly C(29) and C(28)) yielding cholesterol (C(27)). The final step of this dealkylation pathway involves desmosterol reductase (

Identification and Characterization of 24-Dehydrocholesterol Reductase (DHCR24) in the Two-Spotted Cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus

open access: yesInsects, 2021
Arthropods, including insects, convert sterols into cholesterol due to the inability to synthesise cholesterol de novo. 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24) plays an important role in the conversion. Not only involving the cholesterol biosynthesis in

Generation and validation of a conditional knockout mouse model for desmosterolosis

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2021
: The enzyme 3β-hydroxysterol-Δ24 reductase (DHCR24, EC 1.3.1.72) catalyzes the conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol and is obligatory for post-squalene cholesterol synthesis.

Differences in synthesis and absorption of cholesterol of two effective lipid-lowering therapies

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2012
Effective statin therapy is associated with a marked reduction of cardiovascular events. However, the explanation for full benefits obtained for LDL cholesterol targets by combined lipid-lowering therapy is controversial.

Identification of a new plasma biomarker of Alzheimer's disease using metabolomics technology

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2012
We performed unbiased analysis of steroid-related compounds to identify novel Alzheimer's disease (AD) plasma biomarkers using liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectroscopy.

Basis for rapid efflux of biosynthetic desmosterol from cells

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
Previous work shows that the efflux of biosynthetic desmosterol from cells is three times more efficient than that of cholesterol. To explain this difference, we labeled CHO-K1 cells with [3H]acetate precursor and measured sterols in the whole cells ...
