The Abscopal Effect of Stereotactic Radiotherapy and Immunotherapy: Fool's Gold or El Dorado?

open access: yesClinical Oncology, 2019
An ‘abscopal’ effect if often used to refer to distant tumour regression after localised irradiation. Since the first report of the abscopal effect in the 1950s, well-documented cases with radiotherapy alone are very rare.

The Abscopal Effect of Local Radiotherapy: Using Immunotherapy to Make a Rare Event Clinically Relevant

open access: yesCancer Treatment Reviews, 2015
BACKGROUND: Recently, immunologic responses to localized irradiation are proposed as mediator of systemic effects after localized radiotherapy (called the abscopal effect).

The future of cryoablation: An abscopal effect

Cryobiology, 2020
Cryoablation has become a popular modality to treat a variety of malignant tumors in solid organs and soft tissues. In the future, the use of cryoablation should focus on its abscopal effect. The present review discusses the increased immune response triggered by cryoablation alone or by cryoablation combined with immunotherapies, which can improve the

The controversial abscopal effect

Cancer Treatment Reviews, 2005
The abscopal effect is potentially important for tumor control and is mediated through cytokines and/or the immune system, mainly cell-mediated immunity. It results from loss of growth stimulatory and/or immunosuppressive factors from the tumor. Until recently, the abscopal effect referred to the distant effects seen after local radiation therapy ...

Pursuit of the Abscopal Effect

Digestive Disease Interventions, 2020
AbstractEvasion of immune recognition is a hallmark of cancer that facilitates tumorigenesis, maintenance, and progression. Systemic immune activation can incite tumor recognition and stimulate potent antitumor responses. While the concept of antitumor immunity is not new, there is renewed interest in tumor immunology given the clinical success of ...

Immunologic Correlates of the Abscopal Effect in a Patient With Melanoma [PDF]

open access: yesNew England Journal of Medicine, 2012
The abscopal effect is a phenomenon in which local radiotherapy is associated with the regression of metastatic cancer at a distance from the irradiated site. The abscopal effect may be mediated by activation of the immune system. Ipilimumab is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits an immunologic checkpoint on T cells, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated ...

Abscopal Effects and Yttrium-90 Radioembolization

CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology, 2015
We present the case of an 80-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma with bilobar hepatic metastases who underwent targeted Yttrium-90 radioembolization of the right hepatic lobe lesion. Subsequently, there was complete regression of the nontargeted, left hepatic lobe lesion.

Abscopal effect of radiation in papillary adenocarcinoma

The British Journal of Radiology, 1973
The preceding presentation is believed to be the first reported case of abscopal effect observed in a patient with papillary adenocarcinoma. This observation indicates that even when the histological nature of the tumour may suggest an unfavourable response, a trial of irradiation may be rewarding. Poorly understood factors which influence the outcome,

[Abscopal effect: Myth or reality?]

Cancer radiotherapie : journal de la Societe francaise de radiotherapie oncologique, 2021
The abscopal effect has been mentioned since 1953. The increase in knowledge about the immune system and the development of immunotherapies support its potential therapeutic interest. While it is accepted that radiotherapy induces an immune response, demonstrating its systemic impact is not easy.

The abscopal effect: Demonstration in lymphomatous involvement of kidneys

Medical and Pediatric Oncology, 1981
AbstractA patient with bilateral involvement of the kidneys with diffuse histiocytic lymphoma associated with renal failure is presented. This case report provides an example of the abscopal effect. Although only one kidney received radiation therapy, both kidneys were shown to respond to this treatment.
