Laser Particle Acceleration

open access: yesConference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference, 2009
The production of highly energetic beams of both electrons and ions is a major part of the experimental programme at the Central Laser Facility (CLF), STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Every year sees a significant number of experiments done in both areas. This has been complemented by theoretical studies that have been carried out at the CLF and UK

What can cosmic-ray knees reveal about source populations?

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Breaks in the cosmic-ray (CR) flux spectrum encode information on the properties of CR accelerator populations producing the observed flux.

Very high-energy gamma rays from ultra-fast outflows

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are expected to lead to the formation of sub-relativistic strong shocks expanding in a dense, circumnuclear medium, and thus have the potential to be efficient particle accelerators ...

ACCELERATION OF PARTICLES IN A CONSTANT MAGNETIC FIELD AND AN ELECTRIC FIELD PERPENDICULAR TO IT, INCREASING WITH TIME

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2021
The paper addresses the problem of acceleration of particles in a constant, uniform magnetic field of magnitude B and a uniform electric field perpendicular to it, which slowly increases with time.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Comparing simulated and observed particle energy distributions through magnetic reconnection in Earth’s magnetotail

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Magnetic reconnection is an explosive process that accelerates particles to high energies in Earth’s magnetosphere, offering a unique natural laboratory to study this phenomenon. Aims.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Evolved Pulsar Wind Nebulae

open access: yesUniverse, 2023
Based on the expected population of core collapse supernova remnants and the huge number of detected pulsars in the Galaxy, still representing only a fraction of the real population, pulsar wind nebulae are likely to constitute one of the largest classes

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified
