A study of dichogamy in Acer saccharum Marsh. (sugar maple) has shown that both protandry and protogyny occur in this species. The two conditions were represented equally in the population investigated. Synchronization of blooming periods of flowers of opposite sexes resulted in reciprocal pollination between trees with different dichogamous conditions.

American Midland Naturalist, 1934
Mr. Mackenzie seems to place undue reliance upon the introductory paragraph of Marshall's Arbustum Americanum, which he quotes. If Marshall intended to merely enumerate the Linnaean species of maples in eastern America he certainly made a mess of the subject and on is forced to the conclusion, here as well as in certain other of his genera, that ...

Herb Distribution in an Acer saccharum Forest
American Midland Naturalist, 1962Plant distribution patterns in a mesic forest in southern Wisconsin were sampled within a 1.71-hectare area and related to ecologic amplitude, microenvironmental differences and species aut- ecology. Of 30 important herb species, seven were significantly non-homoge- neous.

THE IN VITRO GROWTH OF ACER SACCHARUM AND ACER PENNSYLVANICUM CALLUS TISSUE
Canadian Journal of Botany, 1967The media and conditions for the growth of isolated maple tissues were determined. Tissues isolated from Acer pennsylvanicum and Acer saccharum were grown on a medium containing 25% coconut milk, 2 p.p.m. naphthalene-acetic acid, 2% sucrose, and 2 times the salt concentrations suggested by White and Nitsch.

Leaf Tatter in Acer saccharum: An Anatomical Link
International Journal of Plant Sciences, 1995"Leaf tatter" is a type of leaf injury associated with Acer saccharum. The goals of this research were to define symptoms of leaf tatter in A saccharum and to describe morphological and anatomical differences among cultivars exhibiting varying degrees of injury.

The effect of stratification on endogenous cytokinin levels in seeds of Acer saccharum
Planta, 1972Stratification of sugar maple seed resulted in high levels of cytokinins after 20 days. A further increase in the chilling period led to a decrease in cytokinins. Most of the cytokinin activity detected was due to compound(s) that co-chromatographed with zeatin. It is concluded that this increase in cytokinins may result in the breaking of dormancy ...

NEIGHBOR EFFECTS IN MAST YEAR SEEDLINGS OF ACER SACCHARUM
American Journal of Botany, 1989The size and age distributions of Acer saccharum Marsh, seedlings were studied in a mature hardwood forest in southeastern Ontario between 26 June and 26 September 1986. Ninety‐one percent of the seedlings surveyed were produced in 1984 which was a mast year for this population of sugar maple.

Seasonal changes in the physiology of shade leaves of Acer saccharum
Journal of Plant Physiology, 2000Summary Changes in the physiology of shade leaves of sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum Marsh.) in eastern Massachusetts were monitored throughout several growing seasons. In the late spring, following leaf expansion, the sugar maple leaves showed high photosynthetic rates and a high carboxylation efficiency which increased only slightly into the ...

HETEROPHYLLY AND NEOFORMATION OF LEAVES IN SUGAR MAPLE (ACER SACCHARUM)
American Journal of Botany, 1982Variation in leaf form and timing of leaf initiation were investigated in vigorous leader shoots of open‐grown saplings and larger forest trees of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.). Winter buds of leader shoots usually contained 6 or 8 leaf primordia and embryonic leaves, whereas 12 to 18 leaves typically expanded along the shoots each year ...
