Sugar Maple— Acer saccharum

This chapter describes the sugar maple, which is extraordinarily shade tolerant as it develops layer after layer of thick leafy canopy that casts a dense shade on the forest floor beneath. Unlike less shade-tolerant trees, sugar maples do not self-prune much and retains lower branches.

Dichogamy in Acer saccharum

A study of dichogamy in Acer saccharum Marsh. (sugar maple) has shown that both protandry and protogyny occur in this species. The two conditions were represented equally in the population investigated. Synchronization of blooming periods of flowers of opposite sexes resulted in reciprocal pollination between trees with different dichogamous conditions.

THE IN VITRO GROWTH OF ACER SACCHARUM AND ACER PENNSYLVANICUM CALLUS TISSUE

The media and conditions for the growth of isolated maple tissues were determined. Tissues isolated from Acer pennsylvanicum and Acer saccharum were grown on a medium containing 25% coconut milk, 2 p.p.m. naphthalene-acetic acid, 2% sucrose, and 2 times the salt concentrations suggested by White and Nitsch.
