Pharmacokinetics of oral acetyl-L-carnitine in renal impairment
European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 1990Acetyl-L-carnitine 1.5 g and 3.0 g was administered as three divided doses on each of two occasions to 24 people with varying renal failure (creatinine clearance 127-8 ml.min-1). Plasma and urinary concentrations of total-L-carnitine, free (non-esterified) carnitine, short-chain esters and acetyl-L-carnitine were measured.

Long‐term acetyl‐L‐carnitine treatment in Alzheimer's disease
Neurology, 1991In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, randomized clinical trial, we studied the efficacy of long-term (1-year) oral treatment with acetyl-L-carnitine in 130 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. We employed 14 outcome measures to assess functional and cognitive impairment. After 1 year, both the treated and placebo

Acetyl-L-Carnitine in Diabetic Polyneuropathy
CNS Drugs, 2007Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is the most common late complication of diabetes mellitus. The underlying pathogenesis is multifaceted, with partly interrelated mechanisms that display a dynamic course. The mechanisms underlying DPN in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus show overlaps or may differ. The differences are mainly due to insulin deficiency in

Neuroprotective activity of acetyl‐L‐carnitine: Studies in vitro
Journal of Neuroscience Research, 1994AbstractThe neuroprotective properties of acetyl‐L‐carnitine (ALCAR) were investigated in primary cell cultures from rat hippocampal formation and cerebral cortex of 17‐day‐old rat embryos. Chronic exposure to ALCAR (10–50 μM), reduced the cell mortality induced by 24 hr fetal calf serum deprivation.

Acetyl‐l‐carnitine for the Treatment of HIV Lipoatrophy
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2004Abstract: Lipodystrophy is an increasingly recognized complication of antiretroviral therapy for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This syndrome encompasses both fat accumulation and wasting, which may be accompanied by metabolic derangements in glucose and lipid metabolism.

AIDS, 2004
Nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) disrupt neuronal mitochondrial DNA synthesis, impairing energy metabolism and resulting in a distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSP), an antiretroviral toxic neuropathy (ATN) that causes significant morbidity in HIV disease.

Acetyl-l-carnitine induces a sustained potentiation of the afterhyperpolarization
Neuroscience, 2004Acetyl-L-carnitine is known to improve many aspects of the neural activity even if its exact role in neurotransmission is still unknown. This study investigates the effects of acetyl-L-carnitine in T segmental sensory neurons of the leech Hirudo medicinalis.

Acetyl l-carnitine (ALC) treatment in elderly patients with fatigue
Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, 2008Fatigue is one of the conditions most frequently complained by the elderly. There are few effective treatment options for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. To determine the efficacy, tolerability and impact on the fatigue, as well as on cognitive and functional status of elderly subjects with acetyl L-carnitine (ALC), 96 aged subjects (>70 years,

Alternative medicine review : a journal of clinical therapeutic, 2000
Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) is an ester of the trimethylated amino acid, L-carnitine, and is synthesized in the human brain, liver, and kidney by the enzyme ALC-transferase. Acetyl-L-carnitine facilitates the uptake of acetyl CoA into the mitochondria during fatty acid oxidation, enhances acetylcholine production, and stimulates protein and membrane ...

The use of acetyl-L-carnitine in gerontological practice
Zhurnal nevrologii i psikhiatrii im. S.S. Korsakova, 2017An analysis of literature data on the acetyl-L-carnitine treatment in gerontological practice is performed. This review describes the range of biochemical activity and mechanism of action of the drug. The profile and specificity of acetyl-L-carnitine action and the possibility of combining nicergoline with other drugs is discussed.
