Acetyl-L-carnitine for patients with hepatic encephalopathy
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2014Background Hepatic encephalopathy is a common and devastating neuropsychiatric complication of acute liver failure or chronic liver disease. Ammonia content in the blood seems to play a role in the development of hepatic encephalopathy. Treatment for hepatic encephalopathy is complex. Acetyl-L-carnitine is a substance that may reduce ammonia toxicity.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine in HIV-Associated Antiretroviral Toxic Neuropathy
CNS Drugs, 2007Nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), used as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of HIV and AIDS, disrupt neuronal mitochondrial DNA synthesis, resulting in antiretroviral toxic neuropathy (ATN). Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) enhances neurotrophic support of sensory neurons, potentially causing symptom ...

Acetyl-l-Carnitine Ameliorates Caerulein-induced Acute Pancreatitis in Rats
Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology, 2009In the present study, we have addressed the possible protective role of acetyl-L-carnitine in caerulein-induced acute pancreatitis in male Swiss albino rats. Acute pancreatitis paradigm was developed by challenging animals with a supramaximal dose of caerulein (20 microg/kg, SC) four times at hourly intervals.

Neuroprotective Effects of Acetyl-l-Carnitine After Stroke in Rats
Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1997To test the hypothesis that acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) promotes neurologic recovery from experimental focal cerebral ischemia (stroke) in rats.We conducted a prospective, randomized, blinded study in which adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to coagulative occlusion of the distal right middle cerebral artery (MCA) and temporary occlusion of ...

Acetyl-L-Carnitine in Mood, Aging, and Disease
2002Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetyl derivative of carnitine, an endogenous molecule biosynthesized in vivo and supplemented by diet mainly from meat and dairy products. Both carnitine and acetyl moieties have important neurobiological properties. The acetyl moiety of ALCAR can be used to maintain acetyl-CoA levels and carnitine is important in the ...

Use of Acetyl-L-Carnitine in Gerontological Practice
Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, 2019Published data on the efficacy and safety of using acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) in gerontological practice are analyzed and the spectrum of biochemical activity and mechanism of action are discussed. The profile and specificity of the actions of ALC are assessed, as is the potential for combining ALC with other drugs.

Trophic action of acetyl-L-carnitine in neuronal cultures.
Acta neurologica, 1992Daily addition of acetyl-L-carnitine (100 microM) to cultured cerebellar granule cells since the first day of maturation led to an increased rate of expression of D-[3H]aspartate uptake (an established marker of maturation of glutamatergic neurons) and of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors linked to large conductance ion channels permeable to Ca2 ...

Acetyl-L-carnitine ineffective in treatment of CIPN
The Lancet Oncology, 2013Previous studies had indicated that Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), a natural agent that enhances neuronal protection, might be a useful treatment option for patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). But, results from a recent phase 2 double-blind clinical trial have shown that ALC is not only an ineff ective treatment for CIPN, but it
