Acid-base abnormalities and liver dysfunction
In addition to the kidneys and lungs, the liver also plays an important role in the regulation of the Acid-Base Equilibrium (ABE). The involvement of the liver in the regulation of ABE is crucial because of its role in lactic acid metabolism, urea ...

Effects of low seawater pH on the marine polychaete Platynereis dumerilii [PDF]
An important priority for any organism is to maintain internal cellular homeostasis including acidbase balance. Yet, the molecular level impacts of changing environmental conditions, such as low pH, remain uncharacterised.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Profiling allele-specific gene expression in brains from individuals with autism spectrum disorder reveals preferential minor allele usage. [PDF]
One fundamental but understudied mechanism of gene regulation in disease is allele-specific expression (ASE), the preferential expression of one allele.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Tubular Handling of Uric Acid and Factors Influencing Its Renal Excretion: A Short Review [PDF]
In this review, the authors briefly examine the most recent evidence concerning the role of several proteins involved in tubular urate transport. They also analyse the influence of extracellular volume, electrolyte disorders, acid-base imbalance, and ...

Use of intravenous sodium bicarbonate in neonatal intensive care units in Italy: a nationwide survey
Background Metabolic Acidosis (MA) is a disturbance of the acid-base balance that can occur in preterm and critically ill term neonates due to different etiologies. Intravenous sodium bicarbonate (SB) has been traditionally used to correct such unbalance,
