Analysis of the mechanisms of resistance to Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors and development of multiple targeted strategies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background. Primary and acquired resistance to selective Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors remains the most significant obstacle to the success of these targeted agents in cancer therapy.

A Live Salmonella Vaccine Delivering PcrV through the Type III Secretion System Protects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

open access: yesmSphere, 2019
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that is intrinsically resistant to a wide range of antibiotics. The development of a broadly protective vaccine against P. aeruginosa remains a major challenge.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Two Different Tetracycline Resistance Mechanisms, Plasmid-Carried tet(L) and Chromosomally Located Transposon-Associated tet(M), Coexist in Lactobacillus sakei Rits 9 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Lactobacillus sakei is extensively used as functional starter culture in fermented meat products. One of the safety criteria of a starter culture is the absence of potentially transferable antibiotic resistance determinants.

Prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in milk, meat and foodstuff of animal origin and the phenotype of antibiotic resistance of isolated strains

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2004
In 2000-2002 samples of raw materials (milk and beef, 518 samples), ready-to-cook foods and final products from milk (30 and 200 samples) and from meat (105 and 110 samples) and swabs from surfaces in two meat-processing plants (41 samples) were examined

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Mutations conferring ganciclovir resistance in a cohort of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and cytomegalovirus retinitis.

open access: yes, 2001
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is among the most common opportunistic infections in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In a prospective study of 210 patients with CMV retinitis, 26 were identified as having either a phenotypic or a ...

Systemic acquired resistance

open access: yesEuphytica, 2002
Plants can be induced to switch on defense reactions to a broad range of pathogens as a result of prior exposure to pathogens or to various chemicals or physical stress. Induced resistance is expressed locally, at the site of the infection or systemically, at sites remotely located from the initial infection. Upon recognition of the initial stimulus by

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...
