Use of atomic force microscopy for morphological and morphometric analyses of acrosome intact and acrosome-reacted human sperm

open access: yesMolecular Reproduction and Development, 2002
The objective of this study was to use atomic force microscopy (AFM), with submicron resolution, for morphophologic and morphometric analyses of acrosome intact and acrosome-reacted human sperm heads.

SNARE Complex Assembly Is Required for Human Sperm Acrosome Reaction

open access: yesDevelopmental Biology, 2002
Exocytosis of the acrosome (the acrosome reaction) is a terminal morphological alteration that sperm must undergo prior to penetration of the extracellular coat of the egg. Ca2+ is an essential mediator of this regulated secretory event.

Equatorin is not essential for acrosome biogenesis but is required for the acrosome reaction

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2014
The acrosome is a specialized organelle that covers the anterior part of the sperm nucleus and plays an essential role in mammalian fertilization. However, the regulatory mechanisms controlling acrosome biogenesis and acrosome exocytosis during fertilization are largely unknown.

An organized distribution of acrosomal proteinase in rabbit sperm acrosomes

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1975
AbstractAcrosomal proteinase was found to be present in a highly organized distribution within the acrosomes of rabbit spermatozoa by cytochemistry. This distribution consists of at least six linear loops of evenly spaced proteinase granules, which run diagonally across the flat side of the sperm head in a criss‐crossing pattern with the two most ...

The acrosomal zonule

Tissue and Cell, 1982
A structure associated with the developing acrosome during spermiogenesis in the rat and the Chinese hamster is described. The acrosomal zonule first appears in the cap phase of spermiogenesis and can be detected at all stages of development until after spermiation. The role of the acrosomal zonule is discussed.

Structure of the acrosomal bundle

Nature, 2004
In the unactivated Limulus sperm, a 60- micro m-long bundle of actin filaments crosslinked by the protein scruin is bent and twisted into a coil around the base of the nucleus. At fertilization, the bundle uncoils and fully extends in five seconds to support a finger of membrane known as the acrosomal process.

The Organized distribution of Acrosomal Proteinase within the Acrosomes of Rabbit Spermatozoa

Fertility and Sterility, 1975
Acrosomal proteinase was found to be present in a highly organized distribution in the acrosomes of rabbit spermatozoa, using cytochemistry. This distribution consists of at least six linear loops of evenly spaced proteinase granules, which run diagonally across the flat side of the sperm head in a criss-crossing pattern.

Mammalian Sperm Acrosomal Enzymes and the Acrosome Reaction

1991
The sperm acrosome is an intracellular membrane-limited organelle that surrounds the anterior portion of the nucleus. It consists of an inner acrosomal membrane that is closely associated with the nucleus and is continuous with the outer acrosomal membrane. The acrosomal matrix proper is located between the two membranes.
