A structure associated with the developing acrosome during spermiogenesis in the rat and the Chinese hamster is described. The acrosomal zonule first appears in the cap phase of spermiogenesis and can be detected at all stages of development until after spermiation. The role of the acrosomal zonule is discussed.

Structure of the acrosomal bundle
Nature, 2004In the unactivated Limulus sperm, a 60- micro m-long bundle of actin filaments crosslinked by the protein scruin is bent and twisted into a coil around the base of the nucleus. At fertilization, the bundle uncoils and fully extends in five seconds to support a finger of membrane known as the acrosomal process.

The Organized distribution of Acrosomal Proteinase within the Acrosomes of Rabbit Spermatozoa
Fertility and Sterility, 1975Acrosomal proteinase was found to be present in a highly organized distribution in the acrosomes of rabbit spermatozoa, using cytochemistry. This distribution consists of at least six linear loops of evenly spaced proteinase granules, which run diagonally across the flat side of the sperm head in a criss-crossing pattern.

1991The sperm acrosome is an intracellular membrane-limited organelle that surrounds the anterior portion of the nucleus. It consists of an inner acrosomal membrane that is closely associated with the nucleus and is continuous with the outer acrosomal membrane. The acrosomal matrix proper is located between the two membranes.
