Developmental Differences and Implications for Small and Large ‘Zesy002’ Kiwifruit

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science, Volume 54, Issue 1, March 2026.
‘Zesy002’ (Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis, sold commercially as Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit) now dominates the New Zealand kiwifruit industry and the global market for yellow‐fleshed kiwifruit. It is an inherently larger‐fruited cultivar than the traditional green‐fleshed “Hayward” fruit, with an average fruit mass of ∼120 g compared to ∼100 g for ...

Actinidia spp. Seedling Evaluation [PDF]

open access: yesHortScience, 1995
Kiwifruit (A. chinensis, A. deliciosa) seedlings were propagated from seeds collected from their native habitat in China. They were planted at the Pacific Agri. Res. Center in 1988 for the purpose of selecting superior fruit. Out of 2212 Actinidia seedlings, 1425 flowered by 1994, with 794 being male and 631 female.

Forgotten Fruit, Infinite Potential: History, Genetics, Cultivation, and Future Perspectives for Feijoa sellowiana

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science, Volume 54, Issue 1, March 2026.
Feijoa sellowiana (O. Berg), known as feijoa, is a South American fruit native to southern Brazil and northeastern Uruguay, with agronomic, nutritional, and industrial potential. Once restricted to its native range, the species is now cultivated in New Zealand, Colombia, and Georgia, where breeding programs and market chains are advancing its ...

AcGSTU1 enhances salt tolerance of polyploid Actinidia chinensis by dosage effect and is regulated by transcription factor AcERF3

open access: yesPlant Stress
Polyploidy is a dominant feature of plant diversity and plays an important role in the speciation and evolution of plant species. Compared to diploids, polyploids exhibit greater adaptability to a broader spectrum of environmental conditions.

Role of Columella and Inner Pericarp in Kiwifruit Compression Behaviour: A Finite Element Analysis

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science, Volume 54, Issue 1, March 2026.
Kiwifruit compression occurs throughout postharvest handling, including picking, packing, transport and storage. Kiwifruit deforms differently under compression depending on its firmness, with tissue‐specific behaviours. The outer pericarp flesh is the most vulnerable to damage; simultaneously, its deformation depends on not only the mechanical ...

Analysis of expressed sequence tags from Actinidia: applications of a cross species EST database for gene discovery in the areas of flavor, health, color and ripening

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2008
Background Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) are a relatively new, but economically important crop grown in many different parts of the world. Commercial success is driven by the development of new cultivars with novel consumer traits including flavor ...
