Treatment of eumycetoma and actinomycetoma.
Current topics in medical mycology, 1996Mycetoma is a chronic disease caused by aerobic actinomycetes and eumycetes which mainly affects the lower extremities. It predominates among farm workers in tropical, subtropical and adjacent zones. Clinically it is characterized by a firm swelling with abscesses and fistulae discharging pus that contains granules or grains of the causal agent.

We report the excellent therapeutic response of actinomycetoma treated with amikacin-trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The medication was given in cycles for 5 weeks. Ninety-five percent of all cases were cured after 5, 10 or 15 weeks treatment.

Actinomycetoma caused by Nocardiopsis dassonvillei.
Archives of dermatology, 1985We report a case of mycetoma caused by Nocardiopsis dassonvillei in a 39-year-old man. He had multiple nodules and draining sinuses on the anterior aspect of his right leg just below the knee. Few cream-colored granules were seen in the exudate. The biopsy specimen showed gram-positive, non-acid-fast granules with distinct borders.
