Active boundary layers

open access: yes, 2020
The role of boundary layers in conventional liquid crystals is commonly subsumed in their anchoring on confining walls. In the classical view, anchoring enslaves the orientational field of the passive material under equilibrium conditions. In this work, we experimentally explore the role of confining walls in the behavior of an active nematic.

On inferring isoprene emission surface flux from atmospheric boundary layer concentration measurements

open access: yes, 2009
We examine the dependence of the inferred isoprene surface emission flux from atmospheric concentration on the diurnal variability of the convective boundary layer (CBL).

Structure of the Turbulent Boundary Layer under Static and Dynamic Impulsive Roughness Perturbation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The zero-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer at Reynolds numbers (based on momentum thickness) ranging from 2700--4100 was perturbed using an impulsively short patch of two-dimensional, spanwise roughness elements.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Active management of multiservice networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Future multiservice networks will be extremely large and complex. Novel management solutions will be required to keep the management costs reasonable.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Kinetics of Ion Transport in Perovskite Active Layers and Its Implications for Active Layer Stability

open access: yesJournal of the American Chemical Society, 2015
Solar cells fabricated using alkyl ammonium metal halides as light absorbers have the right combination of high power conversion efficiency and ease of fabrication to realize inexpensive but efficient thin film solar cells. However, they degrade under prolonged exposure to sunlight. Herein, we show that this degradation is quasi-reversible, and that it

Permafrost, Active Layer Thickness and Soil Organic Carbon Maps over the Tibetan Plateau

open access: yes, 2019
Using recent observations of mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) at or near (the closest to) the depth of zero annual amplitude, active layer thickness (ALT) and soil organic carbon (SOC) at different depth measured during the baseline period (2006 ...

A policy based management architecture for large scale active communication systems. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
An initial design for a policy based management system combining conventional hierarchical control and significant local autonomy is described. A critical part of the design is a scheme of partial guarantees for policy distribution and execution.

Modelling the significance of snow-vegetation interactions for active layer dynamics in an Arctic permafrost region subjected to tundra shrubification

open access: yes, 2021
Permafrost is warming globally and the extent of this warming is locally variable in space and time due to an array of factors. In the Arctic, vegetation is one of these factors, whichever influenced by climate change is undergoing a transformation ...
