Geometry and Topology of Turbulence in Active Nematics

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2015
The problem of low Reynolds number turbulence in active nematic fluids is theoretically addressed. Using numerical simulations, I demonstrate that an incompressible turbulent flow, in two-dimensional active nematics, consists of an ensemble of vortices ...

Roadmap to Precision 3D Printing of Cellulose: Rheology‐Guided Formulation, Fidelity Assessment, and Application Horizons

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This critical review presents a comprehensive roadmap for the precision 3D printing of cellulose. Quantitative correlations link ink formulation and rheological properties to print fidelity and final material performance. This framework guides the development of advanced functional materials, from biomedical scaffolds to electromagnetic shielding ...

Dynamics of Active Defects on the Anisotropic Surface of an Ellipsoidal Droplet

open access: yesPhysical Review X
We investigate the steady state of an ellipsoidal active nematic shell using experiments and numerical simulations. We create the shells by coating microsized ellipsoidal droplets with a protein-based active cytoskeletal gel, thus obtaining ellipsoidal ...

Confined Active Nematic Flow in Cylindrical Capillaries [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2013
We use numerical modelling to study the flow patterns of an active nematic confined in a cylindrical capillary, considering both planar and homeotropic boundary conditions. We find that active flow emerges not only along the capillary axis but also within the plane of the capillary, where radial vortices are formed.

Terahertz Chiral Metamaterials Enabling Broadband Polarization Conversion Using Polarization Guiding Effect

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A broadband terahertz polarization rotator consisting of twistingly stacked silicon–air metagratings is designed based on the polarization guiding effect and experimentally shown to achieve 90° linear polarization rotation for both TE and TM incidences.

Dynamic Current Routing in Conductive Liquid Crystal Elastomers for Complex Deformation Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This work introduces a novel actuation control strategy in which electrical stimulation generates localized Joule heating in conductive liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) surfaces, enabling complex 3D deformations from a single homogeneous surface without preprogramming.

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers in Soft Robotics: Assessing Promise and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are programmable soft materials that undergo large, anisotropic deformation in response to external stimuli. Their molecular alignment encodes directional actuation in a monolithic structure, making them long‐standing candidates for soft robotic systems.

Taming active turbulence with patterned soft interfaces

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Active nematics consist of self-driven components that develop orientational order and turbulent flow. Here Guillamat et al. investigate an active nematic constrained in a quasi-2D geometrical setup and show that there exists an intrinsic length scale ...
