Graphical models for mediation analysis

open access: yes, 2018
Mediation analysis seeks to infer how much of the effect of an exposure on an outcome can be attributed to specific pathways via intermediate variables or mediators. This requires identification of so-called path-specific effects.

And then there were four: a study of UK market concentration - causes, consequences and the scope for market adjustment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
While concentration measures are a good indicator of market structure, the link with competitiveness is more complex than often assumed. In particular, the modern theory of industrial organisation makes no clear statement regarding the impact of ...

PSO Tuning of a Second-Order Sliding-Mode Controller for Adjusting Active Standard Power Levels for Smart Inverter Applications

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, 2023

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

A Post-Contingency Power Flow Control Strategy for AC/DC Hybrid Power Grid Considering the Dynamic Electrothermal Effects of Transmission Lines

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
The blocking of large-capacity HVDC or the tripping of AC transmission lines by accident will cause power flow transfer sharply and increase the risk of cascading faults in AC/DC hybrid power grid.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Drivetrain torsional vibration analysis and mitigation of grid-forming DFIG-based wind turbine generators

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems
Insufficient drivetrain damping can cause torsional vibrations of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine generators (WTGs), affecting their stability and safety.
