Acyclovir, the new virucidal drug recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV), is the first available effective drug to treat such infections. Acyclovir boasts activity against four of the five major herpes-group viruses, including herpes simplex (types 1 and 2), varicella-zoster, and Epstein ...

Acyclovir is a selective antiherpes agent. Its selective activity is by exploitation of differences between the herpes-specific and host cell enzymes. The major route of elimination of acyclovir is via the kidney by glomerular filtration and renal tubular secretion.

In recent years there have been great advances made in antiviral therapy. One of the most promising of the new agents to be introduced is acyclovir. This antiviral, which selectively inhibits the replication of particular DNA viruses, is being used clinically in the treatment and prevention of viral infections caused by several of the herpes viruses ...

Acyclovir crystals in the urine of a 28-year-old woman are described. The patient received intravenous acyclovir for herpes encephalitis. The crystalluria was accompanied by impairment of the renal tubules as evidenced by increased urinary beta-2-microglobulin excretion. Consecutive series of 60 patients on oral acyclovir and 20 patients on intravenous

Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery, 2008
Herpes viruses (herpes simplex, varicella zoster, cytomegalovirus) are the main cause of a wide variety of human infections. Although the development of successful antiviral agents against infections caused by herpes viruses had been slow until the last decade, the production of delivery systems for acyclovir are a promising alternative.

Abstract The chemistry developed for the synthesis of the antiviral acyclic nucleotide acyclovir is an interesting example of competition among industrial research groups as this product is a generic drug. There are more than 20 bulk producers worldwide1 and, among them, Quimica Synthetica SA, Lachema AS, Recordati SpA, Heumann Pharma ...
