Memory Models of Adaptive Behavior [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, 2013
Adaptive response to a varying environment is a common feature of biological organisms. Reproducing such features in electronic systems and circuits is of great importance for a variety of applications. Here, we consider memory models inspired by an intriguing ability of slime molds to both memorize the period of temperature and humidity variations ...

Exploring the Relationship Between Cognitive Abilities and Adaptive Components of Psychopathic Traits

open access: yesSAGE Open, 2023
Although multiple studies have suggested a negative relationship between psychopathic traits and cognitive abilities, a few identified positive associations between psychopathic traits and specific executive functions.

Memory Formation in Adaptive Networks

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2022
The continuous adaptation of networks like our vasculature ensures optimal network performance when challenged with changing loads. Here, we show that adaptation dynamics allow a network to memorize the position of an applied load within its network morphology. We identify that the irreversible dynamics of vanishing network links encode memory.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue: Part 3 – An Elephant Never Forgets

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Systems, 2017
Forgetting is an oft-forgotten art. Many artificial intelligence (AI) systems deliver good performance when first implemented; however, as the contextual environment changes, they become out of date and their performance degrades.

Reflections on immune system lessons for societal resilience [PDF]

open access: yesExploration of Immunology
The immune system is a masterclass in balance and adaptation. Its ability to distinguish self from non-self, to tolerate internal diversity, to learn from past encounters, and to respond to environmental cues offers more than just biological insight—it ...

Impact of CMV Infection on Natural Killer Cell Clonal Repertoire in CMV-Naïve Rhesus Macaques

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Recent functional, gene expression, and epigenetic studies have suggested the presence of a subset of mature natural killer (NK) cells responsible for maintaining NK cell memory. The lack of endogenous clonal markers in NK cells impedes understanding the

Memory CD8+ T Cell Protection From Viral Reinfection Depends on Interleukin-33 Alarmin Signals

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Memory CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) can protect against viral reinfection. However, the signals driving rapid memory CTL reactivation have remained ill-defined.
