Intelligent control for adaptive video streaming

2013 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE), 2013
We present an autonomous learning agent for adaptive video streaming in best effort networks. The agent learns an optimal control strategy in regards to the delivered quality of experience without the need for implementation of a complex heuristics.

Robust Quality Adaptation for Internet Video Streaming

Multimedia Tools and Applications, 2005
Internet video streaming is a widely popular application however, in many cases, congestion control facilities are not well integrated into such applications. In order to be fair to other users that do not stream video, rate adaptation should be performed to respond to congestion. On the other hand, the effect of rate adaptation on the viewer should be

Combining Stream Switching with Fine-Grained Intra-Stream Adaptation for Adaptive Video Streaming

2005 IEEE 7th Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing, 2005
Video streaming systems in best effort networks have to somehow cope with dynamically changing bandwidth. Various scalable video codecs allow intra-stream adaptation by use of temporal, spatial, or quality (SNR) scalability; optimizations for finer grained scalability are available as layered coding and FGS techniques.

Adaptive rate control for Internet video streaming

2003 European Control Conference (ECC), 2003
The main contribution of this paper is an end-to-end rate-based congestion control algorithm for unicast quality adaptive video streaming that we call Adaptive Rate Control (ARC). The algorithm is based on end-to-end estimation of both available bandwidth and queue backlog.

Quality-of-Experience of Adaptive Video Streaming

Proceedings of the 25th ACM international conference on Multimedia, 2017
With the remarkable growth of adaptive streaming media applications, especially the wide usage of dynamic adaptive streaming schemes over HTTP (DASH), it becomes ever more important to understand the perceptual quality-of-experience (QoE) of end users, who may be constantly experiencing adaptations (switchings) of video bitrate, spatial resolution, and

Fast simultaneous video encoder for adaptive streaming

2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP), 2015
Content providers create different versions of a video to accommodate different end-user devices and network conditions. However, each of these versions requires a resource intensive encoding process. To reduce the computational complexity of the encodings, this paper proposes a fast simultaneous encoder.

Layered quality adaptation for Internet video streaming

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 2000
Streaming audio and video applications are becoming increasingly popular on the Internet, and the lack of effective congestion control in such applications is now a cause for significant concern. The problem is one of adapting the compression without requiring video servers to reencode the data, and fitting the resulting stream into the rapidly varying

Characterizing adaptive video streaming control systems

2015 American Control Conference (ACC), 2015
Adaptive video streaming systems aim at providing the best user experience given the user device and the network available bandwidth. To the purpose, a controller selecting the video bitrate from a discrete set ℒ has to be designed. The control goal is to maximize the video bitrate while avoiding playback interruptions and minimizing video bitrate ...

Adaptive video streaming with long term feedbacks

2009 16th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2009
This paper proposes a video streaming system optimizing resource utilization when the media server only disposes of long term feedbacks from the client. Based on a partial knowledge of the network, we developed a scheduling algorithm that exploits the scalable video coding (SVC) properties to estimate packets importance and that takes into account ...
