Single‐Step Synthesis of a Heterometallic [Cu2PdL4]2+ Hybrid Metal–Organic Coordination Cage

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
A heterotrimetallic [Cu2PdL4]2+ lantern‐type cage has been synthesized in a single self‐assembly step from a low‐symmetry heterotopic ligand containing terminal groups with different metal coordination preferences, hybridizing the metallosupramolecular motifs of Cu4L4 and Pd2L4 cages.

Stable Mg2+ Dication Weakly Stabilized/Coordinated in Solution: Synthesis, Structure, Reactivity, and Use in Catalysis

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Stable Mg2+ dication stabilized only by weakly coordinating carborates was first prepared and structurally characterized as a soluble salt in organic solvents. Combined experimental and theoretical data provided valuable insights into its behavior/reactivity in solution.

Iridium‐Catalyzed Asymmetric Allenylic Substitution via Kinetic Resolution Enabled by New Monodentate Ligands

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The first kinetic resolution of allenylic alcohols by asymmetric allenylic substitution has been achieved, which was enabled by the design of a new chiral ligand that altered the energetic profiles of the previously established pathways. Both secondary and tertiary alcohols were suitable substrates.

Unprecedented “off‐pathway” [2+2] Cycloaddition‐Retroelectrocyclization Reaction Between an Unsymmetric Alkyne and Tetracyanoquinodimethane

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The widely used [2+2] cycloaddition‐retroelectrocyclization reaction between tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and an activated alkyne has been shown to occur with “inverted” regiochemistry to give exclusive formation of an unexpected regioisomer. A combined experimental and theoretical study helped unravel the peculiar reaction mechanism underlying the ...

The Mechanism of Ruthenium‐Catalyzed Directed C─H Arylation of Arenes: The Key Role of Bis‐Cyclometalated Intermediates

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The mechanism of Ru‐catalyzed N‐directed C─H ortho‐arylation with haloarenes is addressed through experimental stoichiometric, catalytic kinetic, and DFT studies. These reveal a key role for bis‐cyclometallated ruthenium species and show bromoarene activation proceeds via a concerted oxidative addition.
