Murine MPDZ-linked hydrocephalus is caused by hyperpermeability of the choroid plexus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Though congenital hydrocephalus is heritable, it has been linked only to eight genes, one of which is MPDZ Humans and mice that carry a truncated version of MPDZ incur severe hydrocephalus resulting in acute morbidity and lethality.

Rab7a is required to degrade select blood-brain barrier junctional proteins after ischemic stroke

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica Communications
The integrity of adherens and tight junctions is critical for blood-brain barrier (BBB) function in the healthy brain. Disassembly of cell junctions due to degradation of adherens and tight junction-associated proteins leads to acute BBB dysfunction ...

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors Induce Intestinal Epithelial Injury and a Senescence‐Like Phenotype

open access: yesiNew Medicine, EarlyView.
ICI treatment promotes the infiltration of activated immune cells into the intestinal mucosa. This inflammatory microenvironment is associated with significant epithelial injury, characterized by the disruption of the epithelial barrier, the depletion of specialized secretory cell lineages, and the induction of a premature senescence phenotype ...

eXamine: a Cytoscape app for exploring annotated modules in networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background. Biological networks have growing importance for the interpretation of high-throughput "omics" data. Statistical and combinatorial methods allow to obtain mechanistic insights through the extraction of smaller subnetwork modules.

MPDZ promotes DLL4-induced Notch signaling during angiogenesis

open access: yeseLife, 2018
Angiogenesis is coordinated by VEGF and Notch signaling. DLL4-induced Notch signaling inhibits tip cell formation and vessel branching. To ensure proper Notch signaling, receptors and ligands are clustered at adherens junctions.

Brain Pericytes and Wnt/β‐Catenin Signaling Induce Functional Blood–Brain Barrier Phenotype in Human iPSC‐Derived Model

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
This study shows that human iPSC‐derived endothelial cells acquire a functional blood–brain barrier phenotype when co‐cultured with brain pericytes and stimulated with CHIR‐99021, a Wnt/β‐catenin activator. This model recapitulates key barrier properties, inflammatory responses, and transcriptomic features of the native human BBB, offering new ...

Adherens Junctions: Demonstration in Human Epidermis

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 1993
Adherens junctions are intercellular and cell-matrix junctions that, like desmosomes and hemidesmosomes, mediate adhesion of cells to each other or to matrix structures. These junctions have been detected recently in cultured human keratinocytes, indicating that they may be of importance in epidermis.

Microtubule-dependent balanced cell contraction and luminal-matrix modification accelerate epithelial tube fusion

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
During tracheal tube fusion in Drosophila, a pair of tip cells form an adherens junction and then fuse their plasma membranes. Here the authors show that a balanced pulling force mediated by myosin and microtubules, as well as localized deposition of ...

Mtss1 promotes cell-cell junction assembly and stability through the small GTPase Rac1.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Cell-cell junctions are an integral part of epithelia and are often disrupted in cancer cells during epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which is a main driver of metastatic spread.

Inflammatory Shift in Chronic Rhinosinusitis Amidst Guangzhou's Urbanization (2000–2018)

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) exhibits temporal and geographic diversity in pathological endotypes with progressive eosinophilic infiltration, while the underlying causes remain unclear. Current pathological endotypes determination relies on mean cell count per high‐power field, requiring accuracy optimization.
