A taxonomic reassessment of Viburnum (Adoxaceae) in the Azores

open access: yesPhytotaxa, 2015
The taxonomic status of the Azorean endemic Viburnum tinus subsp. subcordatum is reassessed, using morphological characters and new molecular data from the ITS region and the trnK intron. A survey of morphological variation supports the recognition of V. tinus subsp. subcordatum as distinct from V. tinus subsp. tinus and the Canary endemic V.

Morphological and anatomical study of the genus Sambucus L. (Adoxaceae) in Iran

open access: yes, 2021
Sambucus L. (Adoxaceae) with 25 extant taxa is a tall tree-like shrub and can be found growing in temperate and subtropical regions in Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America (Mabberley 2008). Sambucus was previously classified in the Caprifoliaceae family but due to new genetic research and reclassification (Donoghue 2003), it now belongs to ...

Developing an understanding of American elderberry (Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis (L.) Bolli) to support breeding efforts

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 66, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Abstract Elderberries (Sambucus spp.) have been valued as food and medicine around the world for millennia. Elderberry products are experiencing an increase in demand as ongoing research substantiates their putative health benefits. European elderberries (Sambucus nigra subsp. nigra) are an established industry in Europe and are often imported into the

Phylogeny, systematics and evolution of mimicry patterns in Neotropical limenitidine butterflies

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, January‐March 2026.
The most comprehensive phylogeny for Adelpha reveals that it is not monophyletic, supporting the description of the new genus Adelphina for the alala‐group. The rate of mimicry evolution increases towards the tropics, consistent with the hypothesis of stronger biotic interactions near the equator.

Risks for human health related to the presence of plant lectins in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract The European Commission asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to assess the risk related to the presence of plant lectins in food. Based on the available evidence, the CONTAM Panel considered only phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), a legume lectin from beans (Phaseolus sp.), for the risk characterisation.

Pollen Foraging by Bumble Bee Queens During a Critical Nesting Period Revealed by DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
During the nest‐founding stage of the bumble bee (Apidae: Bombus) life cycle, solitary queen bees gather floral pollen to feed their offspring in nascent colonies. Here, in the first study of queen pollen loads in the southeastern U.S., we use next‐generation sequencing to characterize the pollen collected by wild bumble bee queens across northern and ...
