Adrenergic Beta Agonists and Anticholinergics in Obstructive Lung Diseases
Journal of Aerosol Medicine, 1997ABSTRACT Airflow obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is due to the combination of airway disease and emphysema, may be accompanied by airway reactivity, and may be partially reversible. Aerosol deposition is affected by airway geometry.

Asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and airway smooth muscle (ASM) cell contraction. Current treatments for asthma include beta‐agonists which activate the beta 2‐adrenergic receptor, a G protein‐coupled receptor (GPCR) that promotes Gs‐dependent production of cAMP leading to ASM relaxation.

Polymorphisms of beta2-adrenergic receptor gene (ADRB2) are clinically relevant for several reasons, including as a risk factor for asthma development/severity and predicting the effectiveness of treatment with beta2-agonists in reducing asthma symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine the association between ADRB2 gene polymorphisms and asthma in

Few studies have addressed whether target tissue adrenergic receptors in humans undergo desensitization in response to agonist administration. To determine whether lung cell beta 2-adrenergic receptors (beta 2-AR) undergo such desensitization, we harvested bronchial epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages via bronchoscopy from eight normal subjects ...

This study was designed to clarify the mechanism of tolerance that occurs during prolonged administration of a beta-agonist in relation to membrane phospholipid degradation and to elucidate the effect of diltiazem, a calcium antagonist. Guinea pigs were divided into 3 groups: (1) control--physiological saline (0.5 ml) was injected once a day for 7 ...
