The neurotoxicity of aflatoxin B1 in the rat

The effects of repeated intraperitoneal administration of aflatoxin B1 on the peripheral and central nervous systems of rats were investigated. Biochemical markers of neurotoxicity were monitored in nervous tissues following aflatoxin B1 dosage and after the cessation of aflatoxin B1 administration.

THE aflatoxins, a group of related mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus flavus, have been extensively evaluated for biological activity. They are carcinogenic in animals1–5. The aflatoxin B1 fraction has been teratogenic in hamsters6, probably mutagenic in micro-organisms7 and caused chromosome breakage in mammalian cell cultures7,8.

Fungal degradation of aflatoxin B1

A number of fungal cultures were screened to select an organism suitable to be used in the detoxification of aflatoxin B1. They were co-cultured in Czapek-Dox-Casamino acid medium with aflatoxin B1 producing Aspergillus flavus. Residues of aflatoxin B1 in broiler meat: Effect of age and dietary aflatoxin B1 levels

This study describes the effect of dietary levels of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and age of the birds upon the residue level in liver and muscles of broiler chicks. In three different experiments broiler chicks of 7, 14 and 28 days of age were kept for 7 days on contaminated rations having 1600, 3200 and 6400 μg/kg AFB1.

The effects of various factors, such as pH, buffer, sodiumchloride and ultra-violet radiation on the fluorescence of aflatoxins B1 and G1 have been studied. The fluorescence characteristics of aflatoxins B1 and G1 underwent a marked change at pH values above 7.2.

Metabolism of aflatoxin B1 by the guinea-pig

Abstract Aflatoxin B 1 was given by ip injection to year-old female guinea-pigs and 6 hr later aflatoxin B 1 and its metabolites were recovered and isolated chromatographically. Approximately 14% of the administered toxin was represented by the isolated compounds.
