Complete dependence between Ag NORs and C-positive heterochromatin revealed by simultaneous Ag-NOR C-banding method

Cell Biology International Reports, 1983
In the present paper we report a technique which permits the simultaneous observation of C-banded material and the active NORs or nucleoli in both mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of mammals and insects. The use of the present technique permits to establish a complete correlation between the C-banded positive regions and the presence of nucleoli ...

Ag-NOR staining in mouse sarcoma ascites cells

Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, 1983
In sarcoma cells, the nucleoli are small, ill-defined, and are present in large numbers making it difficult to stain them by classical staining procedures. A modified Ag-NOR technique has been applied to detect the nucleolus and the nucleolar-organizing region in the chromosome of a mouse sarcoma-180 ascites cell-line. The cells were found to have 8-14

“Ag-NORs” are not always true NORs: new evidence in mammals

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 2002
In spite of uncertainty about the biochemical processes involved, silver staining is a widely used technique for assessing the locations of active NORs in eukaryotic genomes in general, and in mammalian genomes in particular. However, following a previous study of hedgehog chromosomes, we present here a second example from two gerbil species (Rodentia,

Brain Ag-NOR activity in cholestatic rats with hepatic encephalopathy

Hepatology Research, 2002
The serious repercussions of cholestasis in the liver and other organic systems have led to the creation of many experimental models in efforts to understand better its pathogenesis, prophylaxis and treatment. The extrahepatic cholestasis produces an encephalopathy by the deposition of neurotoxins in the brain similar to alcoholic and other hepatic ...

A new version of the Ag−NOR technique. A combination with DAPI staining

The Histochemical Journal, 1996
The Ag-NOR staining technique is widely used for visualizing nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in various plant and animal tissues. We describe a simple and time-saving combination of Ag-NOR staining with DNA detection by fluorescence microscopy. This modification was tested on cultured cells and semi-thin sections of plastic-embedded tissues.

Nucleolar organizer regions (Ag-NORs) in multinuclear osteoclasts

Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, 1998
Osteoclasts are multinuclear bone-resorbing cells. Little is known about regulation of gene expression in these cells and how it changes during the aging of an osteoclast, which is indicated by an increasing number of nuclei. Silver staining of nucleolar organizer regions, so-called Ag-NORs, allows us to assess the activity of rRNA expression.
