The Relationship between Accretion Disc Age and Stellar Age and its Consequences for Proto-Stellar Discs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We show that for young stars which are still accreting and for which measurements of stellar age, disc mass and accretion rate are available, nominal disc age (Disc Age = Disc Mass / Accretion Rate) is approximately equal to the stellar age, at least within the considerable observational scatter.

Detection of risk factors for obesity in early childhood with quantile regression methods for longitudinal data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This article compares and discusses three different statistical methods for investigating risk factors for overweight and obesity in early childhood by means of the LISA study, a recent German birth cohort study with 3097 children.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Forkhead transcription factors and ageing [PDF]

open access: yesOncogene, 2008
Mutations in single genes and environmental interventions can extend healthy lifespan in laboratory model organisms. Some of the mechanisms involved show evolutionary conservation, opening the way to using simpler invertebrates to understand human ageing.

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Feasibility of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy in men at senior age ≥75 years: perioperative, functional, and oncological outcomes of a high-volume center

open access: yesThe Aging Male, 2022
Objectives The aim of this study was to assess whether age ≥75 years impairs surgical, functional, and oncological outcomes after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).

Personalized Age Progression with Aging Dictionary [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
In this paper, we aim to automatically render aging faces in a personalized way. Basically, a set of age-group specific dictionaries are learned, where the dictionary bases corresponding to the same index yet from different dictionaries form a particular aging process pattern cross different age groups, and a linear combination of these patterns ...

The effect of visual impairment on quality of life of children aged 3-16 years [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: It is well known that visual impairment (VI) has a detrimental effect on Quality of Life (QoL) in adults. Little is known about the effects of VI in childhood. Aims: To evaluate the effects of VI on QoL of children.
