Akirins in sea lice: First steps towards a deeper understanding

Experimental Parasitology, 2013
Sea lice (Copepoda, Caligidae) are the most widely distributed marine pathogens in the salmon industry. Vaccination could be an environmentally friendly alternative for sea lice control; however, research on the development of such vaccines is still at an early stage of development.

Control of multiple arthropod vector infestations with subolesin/akirin vaccines

Vaccine, 2013
Diseases transmitted by arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies greatly impact human and animal health and thus their control is important for the eradication of vector-borne diseases (VBD). Vaccination is an environmentally friendly alternative for vector control that allows control of several VBD by targeting their common vector ...

Akirins Clarify NF-κB Signaling

Science Signaling, 2008
Once again, the fruit fly has proven an invaluable tool for revealing information about the immune responses involving the transcription factor nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), as Beutler and Moresco emphasize. Goto et al . performed a genome-wide RNA interference (RNAi) screen in cultured Drosophila

Transcription profile, NF-ĸB promoter activation, and antiviral activity of Amphiprion clarkii Akirin-2

Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2021
Animal defense system constitutes a series of distinct mechanisms that specifically defend against microbial invasion. Understanding these complex biological mechanisms is of paramount importance for implementing disease prevention strategies. In this study, the transcription factor, Akirin-2 was identified from ornamental fish Amphiprion clarkii and ...

Molecular characterization and functional analysis of Akirin from black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)

Fish and Shellfish Immunology, 2019
Akirin, which are members of the NF-κB signaling pathway, play critical roles in regulating the expression of antimicrobial peptides. In the present study, the Akirin gene from Penaeus monodon was identified from a transcriptome database and designated as PmAkirin.

Targeting arthropod subolesin/akirin for the development of a universal vaccine for control of vector infestations and pathogen transmission

Veterinary Parasitology, 2011
Diseases caused by arthropod-borne pathogens greatly impact on human and animal health. Recent research has provided evidence that tick protective antigens can be used for development of vaccines with the dual target of controlling arthropod infestations and reducing their vector capacity for pathogens.

Positioning the expanded akirin gene family of Atlantic salmon within the transcriptional networks of myogenesis

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2010
Vertebrate akirin genes usually form a family with one-to-three members that regulate gene expression during the innate immune response, carcinogenesis and myogenesis. We recently established that an expanded family of eight akirin genes is conserved across salmonid fish.

A critical role for the nuclear protein Akirin in larval development in Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata

Insect Molecular Biology
Abstract Akirin is a nuclear protein that controls development in vertebrates and invertebrates. The function of Akirin has not been assessed in any Coleopteran insects. We found that high levels of akirin transcripts in Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata

Characterization of Aedes albopictus akirin for the control of mosquito and sand fly infestations

2017
The control of arthropod vectors of pathogens that affect human and animal health is important for the eradication of vector-borne diseases. Recent evidences showed a reduction in the survival and/or fertility of mosquitoes, sand flies and poultry red mites fed in vitro with antibodies against the recombinant Aedes albopictus akirin.
