A DNP‐Supported Solid‐State NMR Approach to Study Nucleic Acids In Situ Reveals Berberine‐Stabilized Hoogsteen Structures in Mitochondria

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Mitochondria are vital for energy production and rely on intricate nucleic acid structures to regulate gene expression. Using DNP‐ssNMR (dynamic nuclear polarization solid‐state NMR), we observed G‐quadruplex formation in intact mitochondria treated with berberine.

Downregulation of O‐GlcNAcylation enhances etoposide‐induced p53‐mediated apoptosis in HepG2 human liver cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Etoposide, a topoisomerase II inhibitor, reduces O‐GlcNAcylation in HepG2 liver cancer cells. Further inhibition of O‐GlcNAc transferase by OSMI‐1 enhanced etoposide‐induced apoptosis, lowering the IC50 for viability and increasing the EC50 for cytotoxicity.

Oxidative Rearrangements of the Alkaloid Intermediate Geissoschizine

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
19E‐geissoschizine is a key precursor in the biosynthesis of monoterpene indole alkaloids such as strychnine, ibogaine, and vinblastine. Using enzymatic assays and gene silencing, three CYPs were identified from C. roseus that oxidize this compound to four alkaloid scaffolds: strychnos, sarpagan, akuammiline, and mavacurane. Mutational analysis reveals

Asymmetric synthesis of highly substituted spiro[2H‐pyrrole‐2,3‐succinimide] derivatives by copper‐catalyzed post‐Ugi reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, Accepted Article.
Herein we present a novel one‐por methodology for the synthesis of enantioenriched 2H‐pyrrolespirosuccinimides by copper‐catalyzed reactions on Ugi adducts derived from enantiopure α‐alkylbenzyl amines through a chirality transfer process. We have proposed a mechanism supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, where a hydrogen radical ...

Comparison of different extraction solvents for assay of the polyphenol content in the peel and pulp of 21 apple cultivars from Macedonia

open access: yesMacedonian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, 2016
Apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) contain a large array of phenolic compounds belonging to flavonoids and non-flavonoids. This study systematically evaluates the polyphenolic content of 21 apple cultivars from the Republic of Macedonia, both commercial and

A Pharmacological Comparison of Two Isomeric Nicotinic Receptor Agonists: The Marine Toxin Isoanatabine and the Tobacco Alkaloid Anatabine

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2020
Many organisms possess “secondary” compounds to avoid consumption or to immobilize prey. While the most abundant or active compounds are initially investigated, more extensive analyses reveal other “minor” compounds with ...

Correlation Between Fecal Microbiota and Corticosteroid Responsiveness in Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia: an Exploratory Study

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uses gut microbiome data to predict corticosteroid response in patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Fecal samples from 212 patients with ITP are sequenced. Six machine‐learning algorithms are used to train predictive models. The support vector machine‐based model integrated clinical data and selected microbial species, diversities ...
