A sensitive assay for allantoin

Analytical Biochemistry, 1976
Abstract Allantoin is separated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and sprayed with an acidic solution ofp-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. The yellow color produced is read in a densitometer and compared with that of a standard. The lower limit of quantitation is 0.1 μg per spot (0.5 mg/100 ml).

Allantoin in Treatment of Psoriasis

Dermatologica, 2009
By means of the method of paired comparisons, the value of the treatment of psoriasis by allantoin was investigated in 10 patients. In all cases allantoin failed to show any demonstrable therapeutic effect.

Metabolism of allantoin in Hyphomicrobium species

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1981
Hyphomicrobium species are able to use allantoin as a nitrogen source for growth. Allantoin is broken down to glyoxylate and ammonia by the consecutive action of allantoinase, allantoicase, ureidoglycolase and urease.

The mechanism of allantoin catabolism by yeast

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1953
Abstract 1. 1. A procedure for the preparation of cell-free extracts of allantoinase from yeast was described. 2. 2. Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen required much more biotin for growth on allantoin, allantoic acid, and urea than for comparable growth on all other known sources of nitrogen.

Degradation of allantoin by Pseudomonas acidovorans

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Enzymology and Biological Oxidation, 1966
Summary 1. The degradation of allantoin by Pseudomonas acidovorans was investigated. Allantoate, ureidoglycine, ureidoglycolate, glyoxylate and urea are considered to be intermediates in this degradation. Optical specificity of allantoinase (EC 3.5.2.5) and ureidoglycolate amidinohydrolase has been demonstrated for (+)-allantoin and ...

Allantoin as a Free-Radical Scavenger

Doklady Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2002
In vertebrates, free purine bases are deaminated mainly to hypoxantine (Ia) or xantine (Ib), which are further oxidized to uric acid (Ic) in the presence of oxygen. Its further conversion (Ic to If) is shown in the following scheme:
