Standardized allergen extracts for allergen immunotherapy
Allergy and Asthma Proceedings, 2022Nineteen U.S. allergen extracts were standardized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 1987 and 1998, including of two house-dust mites, short ragweed, cat hair and cat pelt, seven temperate and one southern grass, and six Hymenoptera venom preparations. Relevant literature was reviewed.

Cockroach Allergens: Function, Structure and Allergenicity
Protein & Peptide Letters, 2007Cockroach allergy is a widespread health problem in the world, associated with the development of asthma. The German and American cockroach species are important producers of a wide variety of allergens. Knowledge of their structure and function contributes to understand their role in allergy and to design tools for diagnosis and immunotherapy.

Allergen immunotherapy with cat allergen peptides
Springer Seminars in Immunopathology, 2004Desensitising therapy for allergic diseases has changed little over almost a century of practice. Administration of increasing doses of extracts of allergen source material has been shown to be reproducibly effective when patients are carefully selected and appropriate concentrations of allergen employed.

Allergen-Specific Immunotherapy with Recombinant Allergens
2011Subcutaneous immunotherapy is a well-documented treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma. The major limitation is the risk of anaphylactic side effects. The documentation of clinical efficacy is based on crude allergenic extracts sometimes containing varying amounts of individual allergens including allergens to which the patient may not be sensitized.

Allergenic characteristics of a modified peanut allergen
Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 2005Attempts to treat peanut allergy using traditional methods of allergen desensitization are accompanied by a high risk of anaphylaxis. The aim of this study was to determine if modifications to the IgE-binding epitopes of a major peanut allergen would result in a safer immunotherapeutic agent for the treatment of peanut-allergic patients.

The advent of recombinant allergens and allergen cloning
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2011When the allergen nomenclature system was adopted in 1986, allergens were identified by their behavior on electrophoresis and chromatography and by reactivity to shared antisera. Not only was this unsatisfactory for standardization, but the processes of allergic sensitization and immunotherapy could not be studied in the framework of antigen processing

The Function of Allergens May Determine Allergenicity
1996Allergenicity of an antigen in terms of Type-1 allergy has always been described as the ability of a given protein to bind to specific IgE antibodies and the potency of these allergens to crosslink cellbound IgE to induce mediator release like histamine in basophils or mast cells.
