From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Prospecting the protein design landscape

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review outlines the current state of various protein design approaches. We discuss the current possibilities enabled by recently released tools, highlight future avenues to pursue in protein design, and underscore the crucial role of key databases and resources for successful protein design workflows.

When almost all sets are difference dominated in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$

open access: yes, 2016
We investigate the behavior of the sum and difference sets of $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ chosen independently and randomly according to a binomial parameter $p(n) = o(1)$. We show that for rapidly decaying $p(n)$, $A$ is almost surely difference-dominated as $n \to \infty$, but for slowly decaying $p(n)$, $A$ is almost surely balanced as $n ...

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

A recirculating device of cooling water powered by solar energy for the laboratory

open access: yesScientific Reports
Aimed at energy conservation and water saving for the lab, we have designed and constructed one kind of lab-scale small recirculating device of cooling water utilizing a water recirculator coupled to a solar energy system via a self-made multifunctional ...

The ubiquitin system in normal and infected germinal center B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The ubiquitin system plays a central role in germinal center (GC) B cells, influencing differentiation to long‐lived memory B cells. Oncogenic gammaherpesviruses gain access to memory B cells by establishing latency in GC B cells. Mapping ubiquitin mechanisms in normal and infected GC B cells will define specific molecular circuits in B cells germane ...

Bohr sets in sumsets I: Compact abelian groups

open access: yesDiscrete Analysis
Bohr sets in sumsets I: Compact abelian groups, Discrete Analysis 2025:11, 37 pp. Since Bogolyubov’s 1939 result concerning Bohr structure inside sets of the form $A+A−A−A$, much has been written about how “smooth” sumsets are, where smoothness is ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...
