Intracellular localization of alpha-tocopherol transfer protein and alpha-tocopherol.

The mechanism of action of tocopherol transfer protein (TTP) and its role in the intracellular processing of vitamin E were investigated using confocal fluorescence microscopy. The results from this work suggest that TTP functions by transporting vitamin E from endocytic organelles to other locations in the cell.

Preparation of natural alpha-tocopherol from non-alpha-tocopherols.

Non-alpha-tocopherols are hydroxymethylated and hydrogenated to produce alpha-tocopherol in one pot process by simultaneously reacting with paraformaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of catalysts of benzenesulfonic acid and 5% Pd/C in an autoclave. VITAMIN E (alpha-tocopherol) has been widely used clinically in the treatment of disorders of reproduction since shortly after its discovery by Evans and Bishop (1) in 1922. It has been clearly demonstrated by animal experimentation that a vitamin E deficiency is associated with sterility in the male and resorption of embryos in the female rat.
