Preparation of natural alpha-tocopherol from non-alpha-tocopherols.

Science, 2005Non-alpha-tocopherols are hydroxymethylated and hydrogenated to produce alpha-tocopherol in one pot process by simultaneously reacting with paraformaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of catalysts of benzenesulfonic acid and 5% Pd/C in an autoclave. Effects of various operation conditions have been studied.

Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1949VITAMIN E (alpha-tocopherol) has been widely used clinically in the treatment of disorders of reproduction since shortly after its discovery by Evans and Bishop (1) in 1922. It has been clearly demonstrated by animal experimentation that a vitamin E deficiency is associated with sterility in the male and resorption of embryos in the female rat.

Intracellular localization of alpha-tocopherol transfer protein and alpha-tocopherol.
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2005The mechanism of action of tocopherol transfer protein (TTP) and its role in the intracellular processing of vitamin E were investigated using confocal fluorescence microscopy. The results from this work suggest that TTP functions by transporting vitamin E from endocytic organelles to other locations in the cell.

Alpha-tocopherol in vegetable oils.

Journal international de vitaminologie et de nutrition, 1981The alpha-tocopherol concentration was determined in cooking vegetable oils. The lowest concentration of alpha-tocopherol was found in coconut oil. Soybean oil, peanut oil and rice bran oil showed similar ranges of alpha-tocopherol concentration. A high concentration of alpha-tocopherol was found in palm oil and in corn oil.

alpha-Tocopherol and serum lipoproteins.
Lipids, 1981Twenty-six patients with clinically confirmed mammary dysplasia and five age-matched controls were treated with alpha-tocopherol, 600 mg/day. Serum samples collected on the 21st day of the menstrual cycle were analyzed for cholesterol in lipoprotein fractions, isolated by a combination of precipitation and ultracentrifugation techniques.
