The alpha4 and alpha7 subunits and assembly of the 20S proteasome.
FEBS letters, 2004The detailed mechanism of eukaryotic 20S proteasome assembly is currently unknown. In the present study, we demonstrate that the 20S proteasome subunits alpha4 and alpha7 interact with each other as well as all the alpha-subunits in vivo and in vitro.

Alpha7 neuronal nicotinic receptors: The missing link to understanding Alzheimer’s etiopathology?
Medical Hypotheses, 2010Evidence supports the premise that alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system, sometimes referred to as neuronal nicotinic receptors (NNRs), play a central role in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology. Moreover, these receptors may represent the key to unifying aspects of the cholinergic hypothesis of ...

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy: involvement of the alpha7 nAChR subtype
2011The limiting side effect of the chemotherapeutic agent oxaliplatin is its neurotoxicity, which promotes a neuropathic syndrome. In a rat model of oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy (2.4 mgkg-1 intraperitoneally, daily injected for 21 days), a dramatic decrease of the alpha7 nAChR protein expression levels was highlighted in the peripheral as well as ...

Selective alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ligands.
Current medicinal chemistry, 2006Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand gated ion channels of broad distribution and structural heterogeneity. Their functional diversity demonstrated involvement in a variety of neuronal processes (e.g., sensory gating and cognitive function) and generated great interest in them as targets for therapeutic intervention in a ...

Dorsal hippocampal alpha7 and alpha4beta2 nicotinic receptors and memory.
Brain research, 2006Nicotinic receptor systems have been shown to be important for working memory. In general, nicotinic agonists have been shown to improve memory, and nicotinic antagonists impair it. All of the neuronal substrates for nicotinic involvement in memory still remain to be discovered.

Targeting alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the treatment of schizophrenia.
Current pharmaceutical design, 2010The most abundant homomeric nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the mammalian brain are the pentameric alpha7 nAChRs which consist of five alpha7 subunits, and each subunit provides an orthosteric low affinity binding site for its endogenous ligand, acetylcholine.

Picrotoxin-mediated antagonism of alpha3beta4 and alpha7 acetylcholine receptors.
Neuroreport, 2004Picrotoxin (PTX) is a convulsant that antagonizes many inhibitory ligand-gated receptors. The mechanism of PTX block is believed to involve residues which line the pore in the second transmembrane domain (M2). The alpha(3)beta(4) and alpha(7) nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have high homology to inhibitory LGICs in this M2 region and ...

Impaired axonal regeneration in alpha7 integrin-deficient mice.
The Journal of neuroscience : the official journal of the Society for Neuroscience, 2000The interplay between growing axons and the extracellular substrate is pivotal for directing axonal outgrowth during development and regeneration. Here we show an important role for the neuronal cell adhesion molecule alpha7beta1 integrin during peripheral nerve regeneration.
