A specific domain in α-catenin mediates binding to β-catenin or plakoglobin

Journal of Cell Science, 1997
ABSTRACT The E-cadherin-catenin adhesion complex has been the subject of many structural and functional studies because of its importance in development, normal tissue function and carcinogenesis. It is well established that the cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin binds either β-catenin or plakoglobin, which both can assemble α-catenin into

Distinct activities of the alpha-catenin family, alpha-catulin and alpha-catenin, on beta-catenin-mediated signaling.

Molecular and cellular biology, 2004
Alpha-catenin, an integral part of cadherin-catenin adhesion complexes, is a major binding partner of beta-catenin, a key component of the Wnt pathway, which activates T-cell factor (TCF)/lymphoid enhancer factor (LEF) transcription and is often upregulated in cancers.

Characterization of the interactions of alpha-catenin with alpha-actinin and beta-catenin/plakoglobin.

Journal of cell science, 1997
Cadherins are calcium-dependent, cell surface glycoproteins involved in cell-cell adhesion. To function in cell-cell adhesion, the transmembrane cadherin molecule must be associated with the cytoskeleton via cytoplasmic proteins known as catenins. Three catenins, alpha-catenin, beta-catenin and gamma-catenin (also known as plakoglobin), have been ...

Immunohistochemical evaluation of alpha-catenin expression in human gastric cancer

Virchows Archiv, 1994
E-cadherin (E-cad) plays a major role in the maintenance of cell-cell adhesion in epithelial tissues, and impaired E-cad expression correlates with tumour invasion and metastasis. Alpha-catenin (alpha-cat), an undercoat protein of adherens junctions, binds to the cytoplasmic domain of E-cad and is essential for linking E-cad to actin-based cytoskeleton.

α-catenin mechanosensing for adherens junctions

Nature Cell Biology, 2010
The balance of cohesion and remodelling is essential for the integrity and morphogenesis of epithelia. This requires adhesion and transmission of actomyosin tension, both of which are mediated by E-cadherin. The finding that actomyosin tension reinforces mechanical coupling of actin to E-cadherin through alpha-catenin reveals similarities with integrin

Cytoplasmic accumulation of α‐catenin in thyroid neoplasms

Head & Neck, 2001
AbstractBackgroundAlpha‐catenin (α‐cat) is one of the anchoring proteins of E‐cadherin. It has been shown that deviation in its function may alter the cadherin–catenin complex leading to disturbed cell–cell adhesion. Immunohistochemical studies have shown that cytoplasmic localization of α‐cat in tumors is associated with aggressive behavior.

Expression of E-cadherin, α-catenin, and β-catenin in tubulolobular carcinoma of the breast

Virchows Archiv, 2006
Tubulolobular carcinoma (TLC) of the breast is a rare subtype of breast carcinoma categorized by Fisher et al. (Hum Pathol 8:679-683, 1977) as a tubular variant of lobular carcinoma. E-cadherin is a transmembrane glycoprotein, and complete loss of E-cadherin expression has been observed in invasive lobular carcinoma.

Ultrastructural localization of alpha E-catenin in the rat sciatic nerve.

The Kobe journal of medical sciences, 2006
Alpha E-catenin is included in the same category as alpha N-catenin, and both of them have been identified as subtypes of alpha-catenin. A previous study issued from our laboratory demonstrated that alpha N-catenin is localized in the axoplasm of unmyelinated peripheral nerves, whereas the localization of alpha E-catenin in the peripheral nervous ...

Alpha E- and alpha N-catenin expression in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord.

The Kobe journal of medical sciences, 2003
The localization of alpha E- and alpha N-catenin in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord was examined immunocytochemically. Alpha E- and alpha N-catenin appeared to be co-localized in cell bodies of neurons in dorsal root ganglia, but alpha N-catenin was not expressed in cell bodies of neurons in the ventral horn that showed alpha E-catenin expression ...

EXPRESSION OF E-CADHERIN, ALPHA-CATENINS AND BETA-CATENINS IN HUMAN GASTRIC CARCINOMAS - CORRELATION WITH HISTOLOGY AND TUMOR PROGRESSION

Oncology Reports, 1995
The expression of cell-cell adhesion molecule, E-cadherin and its associated proteins, alpha- and beta-catenins in human gastric carcinomas was examined by Western blotting. All the seven gastric carcinoma cell lines expressed E-cadherin except KATOIII, which was derived from pleural effusion of a scirrhous type stomach cancer or Borrmann's type-4 ...
