Background/Aim: Aerobic metabolism is necessary for ion transport in many transporting epithelia, including the human colonic epithelium. We assessed the effects of the epithelial sodium channel blocker, amiloride, on oxygen consumption and short-circuit

SPX-101 is stable in and retains function after exposure to cystic fibrosis sputum [PDF]
Background: In healthy lungs, epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is regulated by short, palate, lung, and nasal clone 1 (SPLUNC1). In cystic fibrosis (CF), ENaC is hyperactivated in part due to a loss of SPLUNC1 function.

Abstract The branchial epithelium of Potamotrygon—a member of the only strictly freshwater elasmobranch family Potamotrygonidae—was observed via immunohistochemistry, and two distinct forms of ionocytes were identified. The acid (A‐type) and base (B‐type) secreting cells with respective basolateral–apical localizations of Na+/K+‐ATPase–Na+/H+ exchanger

A minireview on NHE1 inhibitors. A rediscovered hope in oncohematology
Background: Na+/H+ exchanger-1 (NHE-1) is involved in pH regulation and is up-regulated in different malignancies. Activation of NHE-1 is one way for allowing cells to avoid intracellular acidification and protect them against apoptosis.

Cell volume regulation by Amphiuma red blood cells. The role of Ca+2 as a modulator of alkali metal/H+ exchange. [PDF]
In response to osmotic perturbation, the Amphiuma red blood cell regulates volume back to "normal" levels. After osmotic swelling, the cells lose K, Cl, and osmotically obliged H2O (regulatory volume decrease [RVD] ). After osmotic shrinkage, cell volume

Abstract figure legend 6‐Methylsulfinylhexyl isothiocyanate (6‐MSITC, hexaraphane), a wasabi sulfinyl compound, activates intracellular carbonic anhydrase (CA)‐mediated sequential HCO3−, Na+, H+ and Ca2+ transport through an activation axis involving HCO3−‐transporting solute carrier family 4 (SLC4As), the Na+–H+ exchanger (NHE), the Na+–Ca2+ exchanger

Limited evidence exists synthesizing the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with the concomitant administration of multiple nephrotoxic drugs, and even less examining the concept of nephrotoxic burden. The objective of this scoping review was to (1) identify definitions of nephrotoxic burden; (2) methods used to quantify (use of calculations)

Acid-sensing ion channel 3 decreases phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases and induces synoviocyte cell death by increasing intracellular calcium. [PDF]
IntroductionAcid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) is expressed in synoviocytes, activated by decreases in pH, and reduces inflammation in animal models of inflammatory arthritis.
