Applications of amorphous microwires in sensing technologies

International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, 2007
Amorphous glass-coated microwires exhibit excellent magnetic properties that make them very suitable to be employed as sensing elements in devices for technological applications. In the present work, we review a few examples. Some applications are based on the magnetostrictive character of Fe based wires that show also bistable magnetic behaviour.

Surface Magnetization Processes in Amorphous Microwires

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010
Surface magnetization processes in ferromagnetic glass-coated amorphous microwires with positive, negative, and nearly zero magnetostriction have been investigated. The results indicate helical magnetization in the surface region of positive magnetostrictive microwires and enhanced soft magnetic properties on the axial direction.

Magnetic properties of short amorphous microwires

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1999
Abstract Magnetic properties of amorphous Fe- and Co-rich wires with different magnetostriction are studied in dependence on their length (8 mm L L * is estimated. It is shown that for L L * the influence of demagnetizing fields on the wire magnetization is substantial and the wire remanent magnetization is proportional to the square of the ...

Magnetoimpedance of a glass-coated amorphous microwire

Journal of Applied Physics, 2009
A maximum magnetoimpedance (∼66%) was observed at 5.2 MHz in a positive magnetostrictive glass-coated amorphous Co83.2Mn7.6Si5.8B3.3 microwire. Giant magnetoimpedance in this microwire was increased to 129% on short-duration heat treatment by passing four current pulses of amplitude of 100 mA and each of 12 s duration.

ΔE effect in amorphous microwires and fibres

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1999
Abstract The field dependence of the Young's modulus (Δ E effect) has been studied in amorphous microwires, with their glass cover and after glass removal, and magnetic fibres based on Fe. The study of the Δ E effect can provide valuable information about the domain structure and internal stresses in these samples.

Domain Wall Dynamics in Amorphous and Nanocrystalline FeCoMoB Microwires

Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2012
We have studied the domain wall dynamics in amorphous and nanocrystalline FeCoMoB microwires. The domain wall propagation velocity has been found very fast (up to 5000 m/s) for the as-cast sample. Annealing at 575 K/1 h leads to the stress relief and sample homogenization and the domain wall velocity even increases to 5300 m/s. However, the domain wall

Helical magnetic structures in magnetostrictive amorphous microwires

Physica B: Condensed Matter, 2021
Abstract Surface magnetic structures have been studied in amorphous glass-covered microwires using the magneto-optical technique. Different types of helical structure have been recognized depending on the external conditions. The simulation of the magnetic structure in magnetic cylinder demonstrates dependence of the type of the structure on the ...

Residual Stresses in the Core of an Amorphous Microwire

Metal Science and Heat Treatment, 2003
The distribution of residual stresses over the cross section of a microwire is determined analytically within the framework of the theory of thermoplastic relaxation that describes the processes of plastic relaxation inside the core of an amorphous microwire as well as the processes of magnetization and the phenomena of residual magnetization.

Magnetic models of cast amorphous microwires

Surface Engineering and Applied Electrochemistry, 2011
A theory of a magnetic domain model for glass-coated amorphous microwires is studied. The obtained theoretical results are confirmed by experiments. Cast glass-coated amorphous microwires with positive magnetostriction have a rectangle hysteresis loop, which is characterized by a coercive-force stable magnitude.
