Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Exogenous Beta-guanidinopropionic acid administration enhances electromyostimulation-induced mitochondrial biogenesis in rat skeletal muscle

open access: yesTranslational Exercise Biomedicine
Exercise training induces several skeletal muscle adaptations. Beta-guanidinopropionic acid (β-GPA) is a creatine analog that simulates the effect of exercise to induce mitochondrial biogenesis.

Regulation of glucose transport in skeletal muscle during and after exercise

open access: yesJournal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, 2012
Exercise is widely perceived to be an effective tool for prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, since reducing visceral fat accumulation by means of exercise protects against insulin resistance.

SRC plays a specific role in the cross-talk between apoptosis and autophagy via phosphorylation of a novel regulatory site on AMPK

open access: yesAutophagy Reports, 2022
Cell detachment from the extracellular matrix (ECM) typically promotes cell death via a form of apoptosis known as anoikis. However, in tumor cells, detachment can also induce cell survival, utilizing a process known as macroautophagy/autophagy, which ...

Genetic loss of AMPK-glycogen binding destabilises AMPK and disrupts metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2020
Glycogen is a major energy reserve in liver and skeletal muscle. The master metabolic regulator AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) associates with glycogen via its regulatory β subunit carbohydrate-binding module (CBM). However, the physiological role of AMPK-glycogen binding in energy homeostasis has not been investigated in vivo. This study aimed to

Natural Products as Geroprotective Modulators in Diabetic Nephropathy: A Mechanistic Framework Integrating Aging Hallmarks and the AMPK–SIRT1–Nrf2 Axis

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Natural products target the aging kidney in diabetic nephropathy by restoring the AMPK–SIRT1–Nrf2 axis, reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, and cellular senescence while enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant defenses.

ALDOA Promotes Glycolysis and NLRP3/GSDMD Pyroptosis to Accelerate ALS Progression

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by progressive motor neuron degeneration. Glycolytic dysregulation is implicated in disease progression, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates how Aldolase A (ALDOA) drives ALS progression through glycolysis‐mediated motor neuron pyroptosis.

AMP-activated protein kinase promotes breast cancer stemness and drug resistance

open access: yesDisease Models & Mechanisms, 2022
Breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) are a major cause of therapy resistance and tumour progression. Currently, their regulation is not entirely understood.

β‐Catenin/c‐Myc Axis Modulates Autophagy Response to Different Ammonia Concentrations

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, Volume 9, Issue 3, March 2025.
Ammonia, detoxified by the liver into urea and glutamine, impacts autophagy differently at varying levels. Low ammonia activates autophagy via c‐Myc and β‐catenin, while high levels suppress it. Using Huh7 cells and Spf‐ash mice, c‐Myc's role in cytoprotective autophagy is revealed, offering insights into hyperammonemia and potential therapeutic ...
