Escherichia coli Aggregates Mediated by Native or Synthetic Adhesins Exhibit Both Core and Adhesin-Specific Transcriptional Responses [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
Bacteria can rapidly tune their physiology and metabolism to adapt to environmental fluctuations. In particular, they can adapt their lifestyle to the close proximity of other bacteria or the presence of different surfaces.

THE PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN SULPHIDE BY YEAST AND BY ZYMOMONAS ANAEROBIA [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Institute of Brewing, 1974
Radiochemical experiments indicated that most of the free hydrogen sulphide excreted by a brewing yeast in wort and by Zymomonas anaerobia in beer was derived from sulphate. Sulphate was also assimilated by the organisms but most of their cellular sulphur was derived from other sources. In a synthetic beer medium, excessive amounts of hydrogen sulphide

A Study of the Cider-sickness Bacillus--a New Variety of Zymomonas anaerobia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1956
SUMMARY: Cider sickness is a disorder of sweet low-acid ciders and perries. The causal organism was isolated after anaerobic incubation of the centrifuged deposit from infected cider on a medium which contained apple juice, 1% (w/v) yeast extract and 10 μg. Actidione/ml., at pH 4.5. The causal organism found was a Gram-negative motile rod for which the

Effect of Starvation on the Viability and Cellular Constituents of Zymomonas anaerobia and Zymomonas mobilis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1970
SUMMARY: Zymomonas anaerobia and Z. mobilis, grown on glucose + peptone + yeast-extract medium, degraded no endocellular carbohydrate, DNA and protein even in prolonged starvation. No significant qualitative changes in protein content during starvation were detected by disc gel electrophoresis of crude extracts. Both organisms had a high content of RNA

Glucose and fructose metabolism in Zymomonas anaerobia [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemical Journal, 1971
Isotopic and enzymic evidence indicates that Zymomonas anaerobia ferments glucose via the Entner–Doudoroff pathway. The molar growth yields with glucose (5.89) and fructose (5.0) are lower than those for the related organism Zymomonas mobilis and the observed linear growth suggests that energetically uncoupled growth occurs.
