Advances in CALIPSO (IIR) cirrus cloud property retrievals – Part 2: Global estimates of the fraction of cirrus clouds affected by homogeneous ice nucleation [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Cirrus clouds can form through two ice nucleation pathways (homo- and heterogeneous ice nucleation; henceforth hom and het, respectively) that result in very different cloud physical and radiative properties.

Approximate analytical and numerical solutions of a nonlinear boundary value problem in fluid mechanics based on symmetry reduction

open access: yesPartial Differential Equations in Applied Mathematics, 2020
This work presents applications of the Liesymmetry method to a boundary value problem (BVP) of the governing equations in fluid mechanics. The Wu differential characteristic set algorithm is used to obtain a group of multi-parameter symmetries for the ...

Regional Characterization of Deep Convective Clouds for Enhanced Imager Stability Monitoring and Methodology Validation

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The NASA CERES project conducts an independent assessment of the calibration stability of MODIS and VIIRS reflective solar bands to ensure consistency in CERES-derived clouds and radiative flux products.

Analytic continuation of stochastic mechanics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Physics, 2022
We study a (relativistic) Wiener process on a complexified (pseudo-)Riemannian manifold. Using Nelson’s stochastic quantization procedure, we derive three equivalent descriptions for this problem. If the process has a purely real quadratic variation, we obtain the one-sided Wiener process that is encountered in the theory of Brownian motion.

Finite element simulation of barge impact into a rigid wall

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2014
The forces and locations of inland barge impacts currently control the design specifications for lock walls. This has resulted in a significant increase in the final construction costs of these walls.

Neural network-based snow depth retrieval from AMSR-2 brightness temperatures using ICESat-2 measurement as ground truth

open access: yesFrontiers in Remote Sensing
IndroductionEstimating snow depth over Arctic sea ice is essential for understanding climate processes and supporting operational forecasting. Previous work has demonstrated the use of lidar backscattering pathlength moments from Ice, Cloud, and land ...
