Finite element simulation of barge impact into a rigid wall

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2014
The forces and locations of inland barge impacts currently control the design specifications for lock walls. This has resulted in a significant increase in the final construction costs of these walls.

The [2Fe‐2S] cluster of mitochondrial outer membrane protein mitoNEET has an O2‐regulated nitric oxide access tunnel

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The mitochondrial outer membrane iron–sulphur ([Fe‐S]) protein mitoNEET is a target of the type‐2 diabetes drug pioglitazone. Its unknown molecular function is linked to respiratory complex activity and mitochondrial function. We discovered that O2 protects the mitoNEET [2Fe‐2S] cluster against NO oxidation and desensitization towards reduction by H2S.

Classical analytical mechanics and entropy production [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physics, 2007
The usual canonical Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formalism of classical mechanics applied to macroscopic systems describes energy conserving adiabatic motion. If irreversible diabatic processes are to be included, the law of increasing entropy must also be considered. The notion of entropy then enters into the classical mechanical formalism. The resulting

A histidine‐rich extension of the mitochondrial F0 subunit ATP6 from the ice worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus increases ATP synthase activity in bacteria

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The glacier ice worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus survives year‐round at 0 °C. Its ATP6 subunit, which forms a regulatory component of the proton pore in mitochondrial ATP synthase, has a carboxy‐terminal extension not found in any other organism examined to date. Here, we show that fusion of this extension to the homologous AtpB protein in E. coli results

Non-holonomic constraints: Considerations on the least action principle also from a thermodynamic viewpoint

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2023
For the system with non-holonomic constraints, the principle of least action does not seem to lead to the equations describing the motion, which are consistent with the physical behaviour. Here, some considerations are developed on this fundamental topic

Computational Design and Fabrication of Corrugated Mechanisms from Behavioral Specifications [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Orthogonally assembled double-layered corrugated (OADLC) mechanisms are a class of foldable structures that harness origami-inspired methods to enhance the structural stiffness of resulting devices; these mechanisms have extensive applications due to their lightweight, compact nature as well as their high strength-to-weight ratio.

Segmented Band Mechanism for Itinerant Ferromagnetism [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Lett. 88, 187203 (2002), 2002
We introduce a novel mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism, which is based on a simple two-band model, and using numerical and analytical methods, we show that the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) contains this mechanism. We propose that the mechanism, which does not assume an intra-atomic Hund's coupling, is present in both the iron group and some $f ...

Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

Cryptography based on neural networks - analytical results [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Mutual learning process between two parity feed-forward networks with discrete and continuous weights is studied analytically, and we find that the number of steps required to achieve full synchronization between the two networks in the case of discrete weights is finite.

An affine framework for analytical mechanics [PDF]

open access: yesBanach Center Publications, 2003
An affine Cartan calculus is developed. The concepts of special affine bundles and special affine duality are introduced. The canonical isomorphisms, fundamental for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of the dynamics in the affine setting are proved.
