Ancient bone DNA amplified [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1989
Reports the successful extraction and amplification of DNA from human bones between 300 and 5500 years of age. Genetic information can be recovered from ancient skeletal material if contamination by modern DNA is avoided. Describes experimental technique and results on a range of bone samples.

Genomics Insights Into High‐Latitude Adaptation of Tibetan Macaques

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tibetan macaques exhibit unique adaptations to cold, high‐latitude environments, including shortened tails and enhanced fat storage. Genomic analyses reveal a species‐specific TBX6 mutation linked to tail reduction and selection on lipid metabolism genes.

Quantifying variations associated with dental caries reveals disparity in effect allele frequencies across diverse populations

open access: yesBMC Genomic Data
Background Dental caries (DC) is a multifaceted oral condition influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Recent advancements in genotyping and sequencing technologies, such as Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have helped researchers to ...

Mitochondrial DNA analysis of eneolithic trypillians from Ukraine reveals neolithic farming genetic roots [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The agricultural revolution in Eastern Europe began in the Eneolithic with the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture complex. In Ukraine, the Trypillian culture (TC) existed for over two millennia (ca. 5,400–2,700 BCE) and left a wealth of artifacts.

Modern and Ancient Genomes Reveal Neolithic Paternal Expansions of Millet and Rice Farmers and Demic Diffusion from China into Mainland Southeast Asia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study clarifies the genetic patterns of paternal lineages across East Asia and Mainland Southeast Asia. Han populations are relatively homogeneous, whereas southern ethnolinguistic minorities display regional structures. Shared Y‐chromosome lineages indicate Neolithic expansions and extensive north‐south gene flow, supporting demic diffusion ...

Ancient fossil specimens of extinct species are genetically more distant to an outgroup than extant sister species are [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
There exists a remarkable correlation between genetic distance and time of species divergence as inferred from fossil records. This observation has provoked the molecular clock hypothesis.

Precise Construction of an Antimicrobial Peptide Targeting Bacterial Cell Membranes Derived From Natural Peptides

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An AMP (P 3‐3R‐8I) based on natural peptides, which can target bacterial cell membranes, was precisely constructed via amino acid mutation. P 3‐3R‐8I exhibits antibacterial capability which could be attributed to the ability of P 3‐3R‐8I to quickly penetrate bacterial cell membranes and then to bind to bacterial DNA.

A new model for ancient DNA decay based on paleogenomic meta-analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The persistence of DNA over archaeological and paleontological timescales in diverse environments has led to a revolutionary body of paleogenomic research, yet the dynamics of DNA degradation are still poorly understood.

Structure‐Guided Engineering of a Promiscuous O‐Methyltransferase for a SAM Regeneration Biocatalysis Platform of Methylated Pharmaceuticals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A substrate promiscuous and regioselective O‐methyltransferase, SmOMT, is functionally and structurally characterized. A double mutant, SmOMTE152A/I306A, exhibited enhanced catalytic activity. By coupling this mutant with a mutant halide methyltransferase, AtHMTV140T, for SAM regeneration, a superior artificial fusion enzyme, AtHMTV140T‐L95‐SmOMTE152A ...

Pan2‐Pan3 Complex‐Mediated Deadenylation Enforces mRNA Quality Control for Infection of the Rice Blast Fungus

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Discovery that deadenylation, rather than transcription, acts as the rate‐limiting step for developmental timing in a plant pathogen. Evidence that P‐body integrity and mRNA decay are mechanistically coupled to rapid cellular differentiation under environmental stress. Identification of Pan2‐Pan3 as a pathogen‐specific “meta‐virulence factor” absent in
