Flight training and the anterior cingulate cortex. [PDF]

open access: yesSci Rep
Pilots are considered the final line of defense for aviation safety. Before becoming a pilot, an ab initio pilot must undergo systematic flight training. This study included 25 male flying cadets. Kendall's coefficient of concordance was used to measure the regional homogeneity of the time series of a given voxel with its 26 nearest neighboring voxels.

Anterior cingulate cortex in schema assimilation and expression [PDF]

open access: diamondLearning & Memory, 2012
In humans and in animals, mental schemas can store information within an associative framework that enables rapid and efficient assimilation of new information. Using a hippocampal-dependent paired-associate task, we now report that the anterior cingulate cortex is part of a neocortical network of schema storage with NMDA receptor-mediated transmission

Ventral anterior cingulate cortex and social decision-making

open access: greenNeuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, 2018
Studies in the field of social neuroscience have recently made use of computational models of decision-making to provide new insights into how we learn about the self and others during social interactions. Importantly, these studies have increasingly drawn attention to brain areas outside of classical cortical "social brain" regions that may be ...

The Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex Modulates Dialectical Self-Thinking [PDF]

open access: goldFrontiers in Psychology, 2016
Dialectical self-thinking involves holding the view that one can possess contradictory traits such as extraverted and introverted. Prior work has demonstrated that the dorsal part of anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plays a crucial role in conflict monitoring as well as self-related processing.

Cognitive control & the anterior cingulate cortex: Necessity & coherence. [PDF]

open access: yesCortex
Influential theories of complex behaviour invoke the notion of cognitive control modulated by conflict between counterfactual actions. Medial frontal cortex, notably the anterior cingulate cortex, has been variously posited as critical to such conflict detection, resolution, or monitoring, largely based on correlative data from functional imaging ...

Feature uncertainty activates anterior cingulate cortex [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, 2003
AbstractIn visual discrimination tasks, the relevant feature to discriminate is defined before stimulus presentation. In feature uncertainty tasks, a cue about the relevant feature is provided after stimulus offset. We used 15O‐butanol positron emission tomography (PET) in order to investigate brain activation during a feature uncertainty task.

The anterior cingulate cortex and pain processing [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2014
The neural network that contributes to the suffering which accompanies persistent pain states involves a number of brain regions. Of primary interest is the contribution of the cingulate cortex in processing the affective component of pain. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent data obtained using novel behavioral paradigms in animals based

Anterior cingulate cortex encoding of effortful behavior [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Neurophysiology, 2019
An animal’s ability to assess the value of their behaviors to minimize energy use while maximizing goal achievement is critical to its survival. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been previously shown to play a critical role in this behavioral optimization process, especially when animals are faced with effortful behaviors. In the present study,

Conservative Decisions Guided by the Anterior Cingulate Cortex [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2011
When faced with a visual stimulus, how does our brain process sensory information to decide which action to take? Only in the last 10 years have researchers begun to unravel the neural bases of such perceptual decisions (Heekeren et al., 2004; Gold and Shadlen, 2007).
