Acute larval cyathostominosis in thoroughbred horses highlighting innovative diagnostic techniques

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract This study describes the clinicopathological findings, treatment outcomes and parasite community in nine horses presenting with acute larval cyathostominosis. Clinical signs, clinicopathological and parasitological parameters were recorded at presentation and recurrence of disease.

Nematode parasites of animals are more prone to develop xenobiotic resistance than nematode parasites of plants

open access: yesParasite, 2004
In this paper, we concentrate on a comparison of plant and animal-parasitic nematodes, to gain insight into the factors that influence the acquisition of the drug resistance by nematodes.

Helminth gut parasites of black grouse Lyrurus tetrix in northern England, their impact on productivity and possible sources of infection

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Black grouse Lyrurus tetrix declines continue throughout much of temperate Europe, following habitat loss and population isolation, associated with reduced productivity. In northern England, only 1437 lekking males remained in 2014, genetically isolated from other UK populations, and typified by low productivity but high adult survival.

Comparison of the in vitro anthelmintic effects of Acacia nilotica and Acacia raddiana

open access: yesParasite, 2017
Gastrointestinal nematodes are a major threat to small ruminant rearing in the Sahel area, where farmers traditionally use bioactive plants to control these worms, including Acacia nilotica and Acacia raddiana.

The Conqueror Worm: recent advances with cholinergic anthelmintics and techniques excite research for better therapeutic drugs

open access: yesJournal of Helminthology, 2014
The following account is based on a review lecture given recently at the British Society of Parasitology. We point out that nematode parasites cause very widespread infections of humans, particularly in economically underdeveloped areas where sanitation ...

Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Eimeria saudiensis From Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) Held in Captivity in the Sultanate of Oman 阿曼苏丹国圈养阿拉伯羚羊 (Oryx leucoryx) 体内沙特艾美球虫 (Eimeria saudiensis) 的形态学与分子特征

open access: yesWildlife Letters, EarlyView.
Eimeria saudiensis represents a genus of apicomplexan parasites capable of inducing coccidiosis in Arabian oryx. Our research concentrated on the morphological and molecular investigation of Eimeria spp. in the captive oryx herd in Oman. The therapeutic and management practices employed at the Mammals Breeding Center were reassessed to diminish ...

Antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for horses in Australia

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
The growing problem of antimicrobial resistance also affects equine veterinarians with increasing frequency. Antimicrobial stewardship and responsible prescribing are essential for a future in which effective antimicrobials are available, as it is unlikely that new antimicrobials will become available for use in horses.

Onchocerciasis Drug Discovery: In Vitro Evaluation of FDA-Approved Drugs against Onchocerca gutturosa in Gambia

open access: yesPharmaceutics
Onchocerciasis treatment and control relies mainly on the use of ivermectin which has high activity against the microfilarial stage of Onchocerca volvulus but limited activity against the long-lived, tissue dwelling adult nematodes.
