Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), caused by Naegleria fowleri, poses a significant challenge in humans owing to its high mortality rate, exceeding 97 %. Current therapeutics have been unable to deliver satisfactory treatment outcomes, due to suboptimal efficacy and toxicity, highlighting the critical need for efficacious drug development.

Rapid in vitro test for determination of anti-amoebic activity
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1996A rapid microplate assay for the detection of potential compounds active against Entamoeba histolytica is described. The assay is based on the metabolic reduction of a tetrazolium salt by E. histolytica trophozoites as an indicator of their viability which may be measured photometrically.

Anti-Infective Agents, 2021
Background: Acanthamoeba belongs to the free-living amoebae genus that causes a widespread infection with different severities in humans and animals. Treatment of these opportunistic protozoan infections is still not safe or effective. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of spring extract of Artemisia aucheri on Acanthamoeba in ...

The anti-amoebic activity of some medicinal plants used by AIDS patients in southern Thailand
Parasitology Research, 2006The anti-amoebic activities of chloroform, methanol and water extracts from 12 Thai medicinal plants (39 extracts) commonly used by AIDS patients in southern Thailand were screened, at a concentration of 1,000 microg/ml, against Entamoeba histolytica strain HTH-56:MUTM and strain HM1:IMSS growing in vitro.

A series of Au, Ru, and Cu complexes of metronidazole (= [1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole; 1) were prepared as highly potent anti-amoebic drugs. The complexes [Au(PPh3)(1)]PF6 (2), [Ru(1)2(Cl)2(H2O)2] (3), and [Cu(1)2(mu-Cl)(H2O)]2Cl2 (4) were readily synthesized from [Au(PPh3)Cl], RuCl3 x 3 H2O, and CuCl2 x 2 H2O, respectively.

AbstractA new series of N‐(pyrimidin‐2‐yl)benzenesulfonamide derivatives, 3a–3i and 4a–4i, was synthesized from pyrimidin‐2‐amines, 2a–2i, with the aim to explore their effects on in vitro growth of Entamoeba histolytica. The chemical structures of the compounds were elucidated by elemental analysis, FT‐IR, 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR, and ESI mass‐spectral data ...
