Impact of Sickle Cell Hemoglobin Genotypes on Clinical Outcomes Among Plasmodium falciparum Malaria Patients in Luanda, Angola

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Sickle cell anemia (SCA) may influence malaria susceptibility and clinical outcomes in endemic regions. However, the interaction between hemoglobin genotypes and malaria severity remain poorly defined in endemic African settings, particulary in Angola, where SCA and malaria impose a substantial public health burden.

Evidence basis for antimalarial policy change in Sierra Leone: five in vivo efficacy studies of chloroquine, sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine and amodiaquine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
OBJECTIVES: To provide nationally relevant information on the antimalarial efficacy of chloroquine (CQ), sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and amodiaquine (AQ) in Sierra Leone, with a view to updating antimalarial policy in the country.

Community‐Centric Malaria Prevention in Sub‐Saharan Africa: A Narrative Review of Pathways to Elimination and Global Health Impact

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Malaria remains a major global health challenge, with the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region accounting for the overwhelming majority of malaria cases and deaths worldwide. This narrative review examines the contribution of community‐centric malaria prevention approaches to malaria elimination pathways and their

The relationship of physico-chemical properties and structure to the differential antiplasmodial activity of the cinchona alkaloids. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
BACKGROUND: The 8-amino and 9-hydroxy substituents of antimalarial cinchona alkaloids have the erythro orientation while their inactive 9-epimers are threo.

Expanding the Antimalarial Drug Arsenal—Now, But How?

open access: yesPharmaceuticals, 2011
The number of available and effective antimalarial drugs is quickly dwindling. This is mainly because a number of drug resistance-associated mutations in malaria parasite genes, such as crt, mdr1, dhfr/dhps, and others, have led to widespread resistance ...

Assessing the Use of Oxford Nanopore Technologies Sequencing for Detection of Stable Wolbachia Bacterial Strain in Symbiosis in Wild Anopheles Mosquitoes From the WHO African Region

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study assesses Oxford Nanopore Technology sequencing to detect Wolbachia in Anopheles mosquitoes. To do this, samples were analysed using the ONT field sequencing kit and sequenced using a minION flow cell and the ONT 16S barcoding kit and Rapid barcoding kit sequenced using Flongle flow cells.

Plasmodium:resistance to antimalarial drugs [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales de Parasitologie Humaine et Comparée, 1990
Quinine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum was first reported in 1910 from Brazil. Today this parasite is resistant in most endemic areas to the widely used blood schizonticide, chloroquine. Many strains are resistant also to antifols (e.g. pyrimethamine, proguanil) and some are also no longer eliminated by quinine.

Evolution‐Inspired Engineering of Diterpene Biosynthesis via Chloroplast Genome Modification

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 10, Page 5510-5525, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Terpenes constitute the largest and most structurally diverse class of plant secondary metabolites, with critical roles in plant‐environment interactions and broad industrial applications. Although nuclear genome engineering of terpene pathways has been extensively explored, chloroplast genome engineering remains largely undeveloped, with most

Peptide‐Enabled Nanoplatforms for Malaria and Leishmaniasis: From Intracellular Targeting to Translational Diagnostic Perspectives

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Peptide‐enabled nanoplatforms offer multifunctional strategies for the treatment and diagnosis of malaria and leishmaniasis. Liposomal, polymeric, and metallic nanocarriers, together with cell‐penetrating peptides and parasite‐derived mimotopes, can improve targeted drug delivery, stability, bioavailability, and intracellular localization.

Rapid microarray-based method for monitoring of all currently known single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with parasite resistance to antimalaria drugs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Parasite drug resistance is partly conferred by single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and monitoring them has been proposed as an alternative to monitoring drug resistance.
